When you drop the tuning you need to consider that you would need to add a little tension back to keep the feel consistent with standard tuning. Of course this is all personal preference. Some guys might like very loose feeling tension. A 9-42 set tuned to "C" would feel very loose.

We spent a large amount of time testing the right combo for a tuned down guitar. What we came up with is packaged as Beefy Slinkys 11-54 or Not Even Slinkys 12-56. If you give these a try you may want to consider adjusting the truss rod and intonation to accommodate the heavier tension.

This is good info for the guitar players.

Bass players the heaviest gauge we have is Power bass 55-110. They do ok at a drop C tuning. You can also custom make your own set by ordering singles. We have .26 all the way up to .135 You can inquire ordering with your favorite EB dealer.

Thanks

I use Skinny Top Heavy Bottom's with good results. They are a tad bit loose feeling on the top but that's the way I like them. I have also used a 7 string set and used the left over high E for a spare on my regular tuned guitars.

I believe that the rule of thumb is you wanna go up a string guage for each whole step you tune your guitar down. For example, the Petrucci comes with 10-46 I think stock from the factory at standard A 440 tuning. Tuning your guitar down to C two whole steps you will need to have a 12 gauge string for the 1st string to be at the same string tension. I personally can't play a guitar very well with the strings too loose and floppy. I pick pretty hard and need some tension there when playing at fast tempos.

use 5 string set, drop high string. i use c = 130. less relief in truss lets it do its job. truss rod is not used for action. truss rod should be used to fight the tention put on the neck by the string!!! not used for action. the heaver gauge string helps reduce the strings vibration pattern, helping with your action and fret buzz, set by saddel adjustment.

hope this helps
