hey,
for some reason, my stingray, sound very dull and flat. i put new strings and i cleaned up the fretboard but there is barely any brightness coming from the bass. when i plug it in an amp it sounds better, but i have to put the high eq almost to max. what is the problem?

you mighta got ****ty strings. it happens sometimes. i got a set of eb's with two G'g and not an A.

yeah, that could be it, but a whole set of defective strings is pretty uncommon.

looks like you got two options.

1) get some dr lorider 45-105

2) give me your bass and stop worrying about it.

all in all, i would have to recommend you do both in sequential order, put some dr loriders on it, and send it over..

:p

but seriously, how does the nut and saddles look, making a good contact, solid and all that jazz (stingray?), if theres anything in there, it can mute the strings unnaturally.

mmmmmmmmm!!!!....I've recently developed what may be a similar prob???...lack of sustain....BUT ONLY on the E string (5th fret A note)...it's not the string...fresh ones have been fitted 5 times of various brands.

how low are your strings?
have you had any nut work done? did you change gauges when you changed strings? this can throw a set up way out. i mostly suspect the nut. or the string break angle over the nut.
check the strings wrapped around the tuning pegs. are they wrapped to compleatly to the bottom? they should be. if they are not, push on your string just behind the nut, forcing it down and play it open at the same time. see if that solves your problem. if so, you need to rewrap the strings around the posts so they go to the bottom, or if you cut off too much of the string to do that, get new ones and do it.
if you changed to a lighter gauge your strings could be too loose in the nut. if you changed to heavier they could be too tight.
whats your pickup height?
it could be 1000 things....
check some of this stuff and let us know.
