well i was showing off my new 30th stingray over a bass group on myspace and the majority of people were suitably impressed

However there was this one chap, who made some comment abuot his $250 Cort bass being better, naturally i thought he was being sarcastic and so made a comment about Cort basses which went something along the lines of ..... "lol.....Cort"

apparently the poor boy was serious, and had evidently contracted mad cow disease somehere down the line and proceeded to tell me how i was an asshole and how he and his cort would be so much better than me anyway because he had been playing for a whopping five yrs, as oppossed to my meager 3 yrs. and how i was an idiot to spend that much on a bass if it wasnt custom ( i then proceeded to point him in the direction of the neckplate on the back of my 30th which reads "Ernie Ball Musicman CUSTOM".

Then some other guy chimed in telling me how the necks and tone of all MM's were (a word unsuitable for a family forum ) and how the tone on his self modified 'custom' Jazz bass was infinetly better than my ray

so the question that I come to (and i thank you for hanging around and getting this far into my story if you've been reading) is that :

1. How can someone honestly (a) think that a $250 cort is comparable to any MM bass, let alone a 30th and (B) that time spent playing bass is a definitive indication of a players skill.

2. That the tone of (an apparntly) high range 'custom' bass is light years ahead of a similar ranged bass?

Am i going mad or is the world polluted with angry teenage imbeciles?

this same thing happens to us guitarists all the time. many times at gigs i'll get asked "why dont i play a real guitar like a PRS or Fender, instead." i just agree and walk away. no point in arguing with morons, you just get yourself all worked up, and you cannot win the argument. best to remain in a good frame of mind, laugh it off, and know you have one KICK ASS instrument.

I think the answer is yes to the pollution, but unfortunately they are not all teenagers. There are plenty of people like that and most are way beyond their teen years.

1. Because they have a unique brain with experiences that have led them to believe what they believe.

It truly doesn't matter what they think. They don't own your bass. Smile smugly in that thought.

You've got the 30th.... they don't. I get the crap all the time. I love my Sterling, but there is brands I play the **** out of. I don't tout them here. Another place for that. I hear... "thats not a smith or fender or spector... but it sounds good...... Keep playin' what ya wanna play. Most times bass players are cool.... If they're not... tell them to rub salt in it!

I think I took this somewhere else, but you know what I MEAN. Play what ya want and be proud. It doesn't matter what bass I pull out. There is always an idiot. Can ya tell I play bars?

I love my Ibby's the same i love my Stingray and SUB.
We could all argue a point over one instrument or another but its silly to say "this instrument is sh*t" or "my guitars better than yours".

Heh....you haven't visited TalkBass to see the touting of the $100 SX bassws.

You have a 30th and that is all that matters. Sometimes, people try to put down an instrument because maybe they are jealous. Could be the Cort guy can't afford a 30th and needs to secure himself by putting down you and your chosen instrument. Sad really. I get bass players in other bands asking me about their bass and how it sounds. Most are either playing fender, BC Rich (stater pack), OLP or gibby. I swear I think I am the only EBMM player in the area and this is a big area I live in. My response to them, " You sound great...keep it up" even if it doesn't. I will let them know if they are not heard, but I won't put them or their instrument down. Reason, everyone who has heard my bongos go nuts over them. Then I get bombarded with questions and I answer them the best I can. I see future EBMM customers, so why put down their instrument even if I don't like the sound or looks.

Be happy with your bass and don't let someone tell you otherwise. I remember a certain "older" guy around here (since banned) who acted like that....so they are not always kids...lol...

At the moment I have a MIM Fender jazz and am trying to get my hands on a SUB Sterling For me I can't justify the price in buying a £1000 bass, to me that is a huge amount of money, and there isn't quite enough difference in it to make me want to spend the extra - there definately is a difference, but for what I need a £500 bass comes more than close enough in sound and feel.

That is me at the moment though, were I to be in a band seriously gigging and recording I would most likely be much happier in spending the extra cash, at this point, it is too much for me

As for the other guy telling you MM's suck compared to his Modified Jazz, well maybe they do to him, he has his bass setup to give him the sounds he wants and feel like he wants it to in his hands, a MM just isn't the same to him, I would say a few people here would say the same thing picking up a Fender Jazz. It's all personal opinion, everyone likes different things and there is no right or wrong.

Only kidding mate, i totally agree with you there mate. I personally dont like Jazz basses, i like precisions, but never like Jazzes.
I think the SUB's are a amazing, they beat most basses ive played hands down, incredible.

I love MM basses and some people do not. I have a good friend that swears by Warwick and I recently played a half a dozen different Warwicks and absolutely hated every one I tried.

If the guy loves his Cort, good for him. I WISH I could be happy playing basses that cost $250.

a.) How long that Cort will last under reasonable playing conditions (rehearsals, gigs, seasonal changes, etc.)?
b.) What will be the value of that Cort in 5 years if he were to sell it?

Generally, a jackass like that is looking for an excuse to argue a point, which would have been just a matter of opinion in the first place. Those types are usually pretty easy to diffuse with an indiferent answer like, "I'm glad it works for you. Something different works for me. To each his own, I guess."

Opinions... Everyone's got 'em and their all right.

But beyond opinions there's stuff like maturity, intelect, and the desire for healthy debate in the pursuit of sharing knowledge - not likely something your "$250 Cort" or your "Custom Jazz" buddies posess.

Most importantly is to remember that your choice of instrument is yours alone and you're likely to be playing the instrument that your heart is telling you - not some full-page glossy ad - is the right instrument for you.
