hi guys,

just wondering do many of you on here have your jp6's tuned down a semi-tone? and is it possible to get away with doing this without messing around with the truss rod...?

going in to record an album in September with my band, and for the vocalists sake we are gonna try dropping a semi-tone see if it gives him a bit more range and don't want to start messing around with truss rods and whatnot if i can get away with it??

anyone....Adam-Antium needs help

I think you can get away with that. You will have to tune it a few times to get all the strings to the proper pitch after you lower them. My thoughts are that if you can do drop d with it you can tune down a half step. If it doesn't work after a couple tuning adjustments; bring it back up to 4/40 or do all the adjusting needed to keep things straight.

Yeah, you can somewhat get away with it if you're not to technical.

The only thing is ( because the strings will raise slightly off the neck, and the neck will straighten slightly) you'll need to adjust the trem springs and possibly lower the bridge.

So my recommendation is just slightly tighten the truss rod (it's so easy!!) You won't need to really do anything else, but maybe the tem springs a hair.

i think if you loosen the bridge springs until the tremolo is back at it's original position you might not even have to adjust the thruss rod. and, even if you do, it's a pretty simple procedure.

I've got each of my JPs set to Eb and only had to slightly adjust the trem springs on each to get the trem parallel to the body. I didn't need to touch the truss rod at all.

Who needs Eb. Get a JP7 and you've got B ;)

But were I to drop tune my JP6 to Eb, I'd adjust the spring tension, then the truss if neccesary, then intonate. Then a fine-adjustment on the truss if neccessary and intonate a second time checking the harmonic on the 12th and 19th frets.

thanks everyone. That's all really helpful. mine came with 10's as its a bfr  so im gonna try just adjusting the springs a little and see if that will do the trick. im afraid of the truss rod, will prob give it in to a guitar tech if i have to go down that route. just have this vision of the neck snapping!!

Smart! If you're not comfortable let someone else do it. I do have to argue a bit here, though. The EBMM truss rod is the easiest one in the world to adjust. No string, pickguard, truss rod cover, or any other nonsense to remove to adjust. You can pretty much do it on the fly.

Too much bow or relief, tighten it about 1/8 to 1/4 turn at a time checking after each small adjustment. If not enough bow or relief, loosen it about 1/8 to 1/4 turn at a time checking after each small adjustment.

If you move the truss rod you could always mark the original position. And if it gets tight, don't force it. I notice the response is immediate, but it helps to let it settle in overnight.
