Question Easy question about pickups

Ok....so... many pickups have screws like the mm90's in my supersport visible. If I want to give one string more emphasis (sound louder), can I unscrew the screw somewhat to bring it closer to the string? I always sort of assumed that's what they're there for, but since I don't know, figured I'd ask.
