As the newest member I will ask a question that I'm sure has been posted before. I need to know if/what the difference is between a EB MM EVH and a regular Music Man Axis, other than the toggle switch location. I'm in the market for a new guitar and can't decide wether a Peavey Wolfgang-EB MM EVH or a regular MM Axis would be best. Any ideas or input??

Thanks

Wecome, littlemurray!

First off, there's no substitute for trying each guitar personally. Since the EVH is no longer made, that makes things more difficult, as you'd have to know someone who owns one in order to try it.

My understanding is that the modern-day Axis is almost the exact same guitar as the EVH except for the switch location, and some minor improvements. (I think the neck gets a little wider toward the body to help prevent the 1st string from slipping off the neck when you play up there.)

I've played an Axis, and it has the quality feel of an EBMM guitar.. good attention to fretwork & finish, feels solid as a baseball bat. You could pay a lot more for a used version of basically the same guitar by purchasing an EVH. If the name means that much to you, then go for it, but it makes no sense to me why anyone would do that versus buying a brand spankin' new Axis.

As for the Wolfgang, I have only viewed them from across a room, never played one.

Unless you're looking for the EVH signature on the headstock, save your money and buy an Axis.

The Wolfgang is similar to the Axis/EVH. I found the neck on the Wolf to be slightly wider and flatter. The pickups to have a more raw tone. Quality is good, though not quite as good as Musicman. Also, you've got the stigma of a signature item too. For me this was a downside, I hate that kind of stuff.

They're all good guitars though really.

I don't know if they all had this, but the two EVH's I owned had contoured necks. They were slightly thicker towards the low E string, and thinned out towards the high E..
Bottom line, I owned 2, and now I still have 2 Axis' :D

To the best of my knowledge, the Axis retains the same contour as the EVH, though slightly wider at the heel.

Differences between the EVH and Axis:

Axis has a rear body contour, pickup switch is moved, pot cavity is much larger to accomodate two pots plus a switch and the neck is slightly wider at the base as stated earlier.

The biggest diffferences between the Wolf and the Axis is the neck. Wolf has a 15" radius. Axis has 10". And the Wolf neck is A LOT wider at the base. It feels much different so you could easily prefer one over the other.

Second biggest difference IMO is the pickups. Axis pickups are a bit warmer and creamy sounding. Wolf pickups are hotter and can do a wider varietty of music with judicial use of the volume and tone knobs IMO. That's not to say the Axis is a one trick pony by any stretch. And I think the Axis DiMarzios, while not being quite as versatile, have that one holy grail type tone that I like. They also handle pure high gain better too. They're less fuzzy.

I own an EVH and a couple of Wolfgangs. I like them all. Each has it's strengths and the weaknesses are few and far between.

Try to play both as much as possible before deciding. Neither is a mistake as long as it's what you want.

good luck.

I'm a strong Axis advocate, but I do a quick Axis/Wolf comparison on the bottom of my Wolfgang Special page on my site. Over all, I think the Axis is a better guitar for a number of reasons, but the Wolf's no slouch, and worth a look.
