which is the best UK retailer in London.. ?

musicground/ well rokas but we all know its the same shop! stocks a few musicman.. but ever since i saw a sign saying something like' if you don't intend to buy don't ask to play' i have been put off..

they have some lovely silos, a nice morse and x 2 JP's.. but i am scared to try anything because of that sign... despite 10 + years of buying guitars and working in a shop myself for a while!

No love for MusicGround here.

A sign like that one signifies that it's time for me to leave the shop. Seriously, how do you know if you intend to buy until you've played the guitar?

hopefully GuitarGuitarGuitarGuitar will get some in ...

in the immortal words of clint eastwood as he tries to get the rearward rockets to fire in the firefox ... 'must think wah' 'must pester sean' ...

the thought of having an EBMM wah in my hands is turning my brain to glue

"its a word association game. you mustn't pause, you mustn't hesitate or you'll get a bang on the head like this ... or like this ..."

granted that quip won't mean much to those outside of the UofK but i hope those on this fine tax island will remember Mallet's Mallet? :D

agreed... then got me paranoid about my playing.. like am i good enough to play a BALL.. but then again doesn't every one deserve a great guitar to learn and improve with..

any suggestions of better shops in London..

machinehead is a bit far as it's in hitchin.. but my boss lives there so i could get a ride from the station..

I know what you mean about playing in a shop. I try to avoid guitar shops on a Saturday especially, as it just seems as though everyone is comparing you. Mind you, I am pretty crap!!

There is another way of looking at it though, which has worked for me in the past, I took the attitude that 'OK, maybe I can't play as well as you, Mr 16 year old, but before you smirk too much, just remember that I am actually buying this guitar, whereas you're only w4nking in public!'

Worked for me anyway :D

i may just try that.. i like it when its just me, the guitar and the amp... rather than the heavy sales pater going on behind me...

i was lucky with my ASS.. i had a quiet few hours with the guitar in a shop in Paris.. the attitude seemed more about letting me fall in love...like they knew when they handed it to me it was going to be a match made in heaven..

with Balls the guitar does the talking.. the salesman should just walk away... but i suppose its an industry based on selling so that will never happen!

Reminds me of the time I went to A/B some FX units and the trial guitar I used happened to be a Silo. Needless to say, I didn't buy the FX unit but ended up with a new guitar (it remains the only guitar I've regretted selling :().

Top notch selling by the guitar shop - Try an Silo and forget about what you came in to purchase.

Does the Wah use pots or is it optical?

I have no great love of most of Denmark St although both Andy's and Vintage and Rare have been very polite and helpful. I did once go into Rockers after a business meeting. If you go in wearing a suit and tie they will let you try anything.

As for the whole shop noodling I'm with Jimmyb - I don't think I'm that good and I tend to play simple stuff to evaluate gear - few chords, couple of bits of scales, maybe a simple riff or two. It's better for comparing gear and I'm well past caring about how good I will never be.

Last time I did this I got sneered at by the "look at me I can play the flavour of the month" kid (there was a time when you couldn't go into a guitar shop without hearing 'I Believe in a Thing called Love' played by kids). He was posing away which I thought was odd because there were no girls with him (probably insecure). They can play better than me so what. Now I can afford the gear they drool over (literally in some cases) and I can always practice more.

I'm actually far more impressed by people like robelinda who find the commitment to play when they have so many other things going in their lives.

As for the wah surely people can just mail order one? It's EBMM so it's bound to be good. I'd buy one but I don't use wah that much. Any chance of an EBMM delay pedal?
