This is only off topic because I'm posting in the guitar section, which is where the folks I know hang.
Went to see Xavier Rudd tonight. Brilliant musician out of my favorite country to work in and to visit - Oz. He has a new band with him on this tour. His bass player was simply awesome.
First, he used a silvery blue sparkle 6 string Bongo - first time I've seen or heard one live. Very cool. Very wide range.
Then he pulled out a 5 string 25th - first time I've seen or heard one live. This one blew me away.
Finally, he plucked on a 5 string trans green BFR Stingray - again, first time I've seen or heard a BFR "Stinger" live. He used this on the slower numbers, where he did a lot of long sustained notes, vibrato and slides. Very sweet and rich sounding.
All 3 were rosewood boards.
They all sounded fantastic but the 25th was my fav. The growl he was getting out of that was unreal, and it sounded soooo good when he tapped and popped. Looked really easy to play too. He played some really tricky parts very cleanly.
Well, I mostly play guitar lately but I do love a good bass line and always keep a bass around the house. Every now and again I get to play one live and it's always challenging and fun. Let me tell you, the bass tone he was getting on all of them was amazing, and they looked so nice in the stage lights it has inspired me to really get back into it.
It's also rekindled my burning desire to get a 25th 6 string, and now I think I'll replace my P bass with a 25th bass as well.
If you get a chance to check out Xavier live, I cannot recommend it highly enough. I see him every time he comes to my province, and each time it is unforgettable. Do it!
