I'm thinking about buying EBMM EVH. The owner installed Dimarzio DP155FBC & DP193BC pickups in it? What are the original factory pups for EBMM EVH guitars? Any opinions on Dimarzio's he installed compared to originals?

I believe they are DiMarzio pups in the EVH Musicman. I contacted Dimarzio a number of years ago and got the "those pups are custom for that guitar and are not sold in stores" answer, however the support guy did say if I used a Hot zone and an air zone that "those would pretty close". My guess is that those are the pups used. If I can find the original email I will update this reply with the exact message.

But, don't get rid of the DP's too fast - you may want to put them back.

I personally think the Tone Zone doesn't have the nice characteristics of other DiMarzios'. It seems to lack musical qualities.

Yes, it's loud and everything, but it doesn't really have a musical personality. The other DP's do, as well as most others.

I LOVE the pickups in my EVH. I've had a total of 3 Tone Zones in 4 different guitars over an 8 year period and I hated them. Hot, flabby, not articulate, just not good IMO. I know they are stated to be the closest to the EVH pickups but they are not similar at all IMO.

I also wouldn't consider buying an Axis/EVH without the stock pickups. That is half the guitar right there. I would only consider it if I was getting the guitar at a very reduced rate. Finding stock pickups after market is possible but not a sure thing.

Yes you are right. The pickups in an EVH are special ( and sought after) to that model. Duncans don't sound good, neither do other Dimarzios. Also, you need to trim the lugs of any replacement. What is the point?

To my ears, the Tone Zone isn’t even remotely close to the EVH. The Tone Zone is great, but definitely a different animal.

I’d wait and find to find an evh or axis with the original pickups.

More recently, Dimarzio has also mentioned the AT-1 as close to the Axis bridge. I'm not completely convinced, but it is in the ballpark.
