i just want to know how many jazz player here who use their ebmm guitar to play jazz music, and also their opinion about ebmm guitar in terms of playing jazz music.

i'm curious, since until now, non of ebmm artist who is focusing on jazz music(yes luke had several record with L Carlton, but he is not focusing on jazz music).. so i thought that ebmm guitars also not designed for jazz music (eventough they are versatile enough to play any kind of music)..

that's why i really want to know your (jazz player who use ebmm) opinion about playing jazz on ebmm guitars, and how does it feel compared with playing on jazz box guitar (which ebmm doesn't have that model until now), and maybe which model of ebmm guitar will suit jazz music?etc

i have heard boy oldings, tristan and steve lukather playing jazz on their lukes.. also Jacek Królik with his albert lee.. and they are very nice..

did any body had experience replacing their jazz box guitar with an ebmm guitar?

thx,
abraham

Hi Ba,

Good question! But, did you mean like the "hollowbody" type jazz guitars out there vs. solid body guitars that are being used primarily for jazz?? And, if so, what style MM guitar would be suitable? Let me know.

I enjoy listening to jazz very much, but I'm not a big fan of playing jazz. For me there's only one way to rock - "pedal to the metal"!!

While I'm not really a jazz player, I have been known to hit a few 9th, 7th and other complicated-type chords .... sometimes even on purpose:D

If I were doing a jazz-gig, I would be more than happy to take my Super Sport with me - using the neck 'bucker and rolling back the tone control a little bit .... clean or with a bit of overdrive, it would be sweet.:)

one guitar I would like to try in a jazz setting, would be one of the Rosewood model Super Sports with a hardtail bridge and humbuckers.

btw, what do you mean by jazz? are we talking guys like Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass and Grant Green or players like Mike Stern, John McLaughlin, and Larry Coryell or even Lenny Breau?

cheers, eh

Joel

We did some jazz at church and my Guitar professor from college used my JP6 for jazz. He was actually really impressed with it overall. He rolled the volume and tone back quite a bit and loved the neck. It was being played through an old Marshall 8080 valvestate. It really sounded quite good (but this guy is a phenominal musician and could make anything sound good).

As Joel said an Axis SS with the tone control rolled off on the neck pickup does that sound really well..

The Y2D's neck humbucker with the tone control also is great for jazz type sounds.

yea, i forgot to put ponch , he had a very nice jazz playing too ..

what i mean by jazz of course any kind of jazz, from mike stern , and other fusion player, also wes montgomery, joe pass. etc

i am not a jazz player, btw

i also like TNT's idea to compare hollowbody guitar with ebmm solid body to play jazz, or a full mahogany guitar with an ebmm guitar (i think comparing doesn't always mean good or bad quality, but it can also about the frequency, etc)

i believe what rob said, i am also sure that 20th silo is a great guitar to play jazz since it has a very nice low freq because the mahogany block inside..tough i never play it before.. just guessing :D:D

thanx for your sharing,

abraham

yo bro Fogman thanks for the links :)..but honestly I'm not good in Jazz, I just play it a lil bit though.

For the late 2 and half years i've been jazz giggin' (fusion and standard jazz) with my Luke, and I have no problem to get the feel of jazzy sound with it. Sometimes people (jazz player mostly) always asked what kind of guitar that I play and they literally ask me if they can play and try it for a sec, and of course I say "yes you can :)"..and after they try it they seem amazed with Luke..I mean I've never hear any silly statement or so whatever from em..they really like it, wasn't it amazing? ..well Im not trying to sell anything in here, just the truth from my personal experience.

a few things...

1) you've gotta be more specific when you say jazz. It's impossible to lump Django, Wes, Holdsworth, Stern, Martino, Pass, and Metheny (for example) all into the same category...especially for the purposes of tone hunting. The requirements for getting a "wes" tone and the requirements of getting a "holdsworth" tone are painstakingly different

2)no EBMM guitar is going to substitute for a jazz box. Of course you could use an ebmm on a big band gig or any other jazz gig (assuming it's not a session and the producer/band leader isn't looking specifically for a hollowbody sound) and I myself have done more "hollowbody gigs" with solid-body electrics than I have hollowbodies. If you are looking for a hollowbody sound, then start shopping for a hollowbody....no way around that one. I'd rather not advertise other companies on this forum, so if you are curious, PM me and I'll give you a few suggestions for guitars to look at.

Doesn't Les Paul play jazz?

Surely if he can get jazz tones from his guitar, you can get them from an EBMM?

I play my JP6 in combination with a boogie in two big bands and the fat, warm sound of the neck humbucker works perfect for jazz soloing and rythm work!!!!

 The JP6 is though it has two humbcukers very versatile!

This question often comes up but in the context of "... is the EBMM xxxx good for metal? ...".

The answer's the same- the music's in your hands. All of these guitars offer a wide range of tones and they're good across the board for different styles. If you can play jazz your EBMM will sound great.

I like Wayne Krantz alot. He took all of his jazz knowledge and did something really creative with it.

Steve Morse does some stuff that flirts with Jazz. In fact I have seen the Dregs cover a few Mahavishnu Orchestra songs in concert.

Thanks Abraham for your kindest words that you like the little jazzy stuff that I am playing with my Luke.
I am not a real Jazz player, but I think the Luke model is the most versatile EBMM guitar to get a ton of sounds out !

If you're looking for the real warm jazz tone, so you need a fat Jazz box with flatwound strings.

most early classic jazz boxes used hummers or p90 pickups.
i personally LOVE the mm90 for a big fat versitile clean tone w/ lots of body.

i think most jazz cliche are lookin to see the big jazz box. but like beej said. if you can play it........they will come. :D
