It depends on the piece of wood. Two guitars of the same model will not have exactly the same weight.
In my case, the lighter guitar is the SUB and the heavier is the Morse.
My Axis is also very light.
In every case, all the MusicMan are well balanced (no neck heaviness for instance).

New Hampshire, under some snow.
There are alos variations within the same model (piezo vs. no piezo, hardtail vs. trem) that change the instrument's weight.

And, as Fbecir said, the individual piece of wood plays a huge roll. When I bought my Special, I played it against another identical one that must have weighed three or four pounds more than the one I ended up choosing- it was easily the heaviest Silo Special I've ever encountered, and the one I ended up buying is one of the lightest.

Nothing out of the ordinary about the weight of either of my Silhouettes, but my Axis Super Sport is surprisingly light. It doesn't affect the tone at all though, it's a great sounding guitar.

The Musicman site lists the spec weight of every guitar and the Sub Owners Group pages have the specs for the sub 1 guitar.

When I was younger, I believed that heavy guitar = good sustain (that what the Gibson owners are saying ...) but in fact it's completely false. My Axis is very light and has an incredible sustain.

Wood is a natural material and therefore two similar wooden planks can differ greatly in density and weight. Of course this means that two identical looking guitars can differ greatly weightwise. From my perspective my Axis Supersport is super heavy compared to others I have played but as a good indication the average weight of each model is listed in the specs on Welcome to the Ernie Ball Music Man Company .

Yeah, it's a complete myth, if anything I think lighter guitars may sound a bit better.

It all depends on the orientation of the fibers of the wood itself. If you use a good piece of wood with no knots or imperfections in it, the sustain will likely be better. The weight has no bearing on this. You could have a super heavy board that has 4 or 5 knots in it that won't sustain as well as a super light board with zero knots in it. It also depends on frequency. If the resonant frequency of the wood (when tapped, etc.) matches or closely matches the frequency of the strings, you will get more sustain. It's the same concept as breaking a crystal wine glass with your voice. If you match the resonant frequency of the glass, it will break. Basically, you're exciting the molecules and making them resonate. A glass will shatter because the material isn't very forgiving. A guitar will resonate and sustain because wood is a much more pliable material.

Generally, I've found heavy guitars have a tighter focus, and light guitars to lack focus and punch, especially at lower volumes, but once they're cranked up they can sound huge. I prefer middle-weights for a good balance.

Both of my trem'd Specials weight in at about 7.5 lbs.

I'm taking Steve's thoughts to heart and have been experimenting between my sub-1 (adjustable hums) and my mm90 ASS. Bad comparison, but interesting experiments. With the hums up there as Steve indicated, I'm overdriving the heck out of the input of my effects pedal and have to back off on the guitar volume, which dulls out the sound. Gotta break out the Axis next to compare hums to hums.

I may bring a portable scope home from work......
