A question for you forumites.
I own a JP LE06 and really love the mesa tone.
I found a Mesa Lonestar combo at a killer price, but I would like to know if it's possibile to get crispy clean tone, a nice warm overdrive ala Andy Timmons and a tight lead sound ala Petrucci.
Is all of this possible on a lonestar?
Please, if you ha ve one or tried one, help me ;)

IMO, you are not going to get close to the JP lead tone. The amp simply does not have the type of compressed gain that you need. Great clean tones, great overdriven sounds, but you'll need a pedal to put it over the top.

that's what I thought too...
anyway the guy selling it just told me he got the advert wrong, he's selling the cab, not the combo amp :(

what do you think about the express 5:50?

I've been looking at a lot of amps and the Lonestar and Lonestar Special are in the final running.
The Express amps dont' do it for me at all.

Lots of people seem to like the Lonestar and Lonestar Special. I like the Lonestar cleans. The overdrive is nice. Is the tone you're looking for?

I'm not really into the Lonestar Special at all. I find it muddy. I like the Lonestar much better. Express Series? No thanks.

I love the F-Series, which was replaced by the Express Series. I like the Mark IV.

Phazer, you could try out the Lonestar with a Maxon OD808 overdrive in front of it. I tried a Triple Rectifier the other day with an 808 in front of it and that pedal works wonders. It takes out the flub, and you can also add gain. With a Maxon in front of the Lonestar, I don't think you'd have any trouble getting JP's lead tones.

hel...LOOOOOO

If you're not trying to be JOHN PETRUCCI, it's a very, very nice option. stellar cleans and great rock and blues crunch. With the d-sonic, you can have a great guitar/cable/amp deal going with no pedals. Good palet for pedals. Can go EL34 or 6L6 or 6V6 in regular or tweed setting. MONSTER reverb. footswitchable lead boost, great tone all the way around. GC was unloading the older style for $999 new with warantee. unreal amount of amp for that price.

I played a Lonestar the other day and was not all that impressed. The cleans are fabulous of course, but I like Recto distortion much better. I think my Roadster let's me have JP-ish tone while still obtaining my own unique tone. I also just picked up an F-30 combo. The contour mode is supposed to be very recto-esque. It should make for a cool grab-n-go boogie tone monster!

Hey Roburado, which F-series do you have?

I could be mistaken but, I bleeb JP is using a lonestar on the current tour for cleans and leads along with the Mark IV's. In fact, the lead sound from the lonestar is heavily saturated and feedbacks so much that he says he can't stop playing incase it does feedback. I'm guessing that he's using some kind of pedal in front of it.

looks like i'll have too tryout a mark 4 then :)

best idea ever! ive got a bunch of stuff but it all comes and goes. the jp straight to the mark iv is more than enough for me. there might be things i want but i have everything i need. sometimes i just sit and play just to hear the tones from this pair

If you want DreamTheatre crunch, then the lonestar will NOT get you there. you will get the cleans and the leads though. If DT is not the only tone you're after, the lonestar WILL get you there. In a cover band scenario, you'll be in great shape. If you have an AL on order (hint, hint), this amp will do both guitars right. Actually, being able to do all those different tube flavors makes this a super versatile amp.

I absolutely love that tone!!
but I would like to be able to get much more distortion from the amp, and I don't think the lonestar could give me that.

Thank you all for the answers!
I actually am playing in a DT cover band so I would like to get as close as possible to petrucci's sound.
obviously though, when I'm at home I like to play lot's of other stuff, from van halen, to andy timmons, to bluesy stuff like guthrie govan.
so I would like to have an amp that could give me all these variety of sounds without having to use too many pedals (infact, it would be better if I didn't have to use any at all, but I might be asking too much :D).

The problem is that here in italy it's very hard to find mesa boogies and music mans too for that matter, so I really don't think i'll be able to tryout too many amps.
I've heard some samples of the mark 4 and it's really getting me to gas like a cow!
Now I would like to know, from a combo mark 4, would I be able to get just the powerfull lead tones, or also a nice crunch sound I could use for more bluesy stuff?
Thanx guys, you're amazing ;)

You can do all that with a Mark IV and a JP guitar. The middle position on the JP combined with Rhy2 on the Mark will give you some really cool bluesy tones. I did not care for the cleans on the Mark IV though.

Ultimately, a Roadster will give you more tones and MUCH better cleans all from one amp. I vote Roadster, not only because I have one, but because it is a superb amp and would give you every JP tone you need and then some!

I've got a price list at home that came with my Roadster, but they have gone up since the amp was purchased so it wouldn't be extremely accurate. You wanting to buy new or used?

If I had to guess - they run around $2200 for the Roadster combo. The Roadster head is around $1899 or so. I could be off - i'm just guessing from what I *think* I remember seeing before...

Your best bey might be eBay for gettins someone to ship to Italy... Many sellers offer worldwide shipping. You will most likely get a better deal than buying locally because the US dollar is losing steam every day! Bad for us - good for you. ;)

Here's one:
Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier 2x12 Roadster combo - MINT! - eBay (item 250203440305 end time Jan-13-08 12:13:00 PST)

Not sure if they would ship to Italy though - you'd have to ask if he would and how much shipping would be.

BE WARNED - Mesa combos are HEAVY! Roadster 2x12 one is over 110 lbs total I think!
