Hello,

I want to buy a 7 string EBMM guitar - the first one of the Petrucci models to be exact: JP7. The problem is, there is no way I will be able to try one out, but there might be the chance to test a Sterling JP70.
My question is: Since the Sterling JP70 is supposed to be a lower priced copy of the JP7 does this mean it has exact same type of neck / the neck profile is about the same?

I bought the Sterling JP70 first to see if I can get along with 7 string neck having a small hand.
was comfortable enough and I bought I JP7 after
although you can get the feel of a JP with a Sterling , the Music man is way better in every aspect.
the neck on my JP7 was more comfortable then on my Sterling JP70
JP7 has a sort of C shape very thin for a 7 string but not flat like the ibanez necks
JP70 had more a D shape IMO , still comfortable but not the same thing like the JP7
also jp7 has a 47 mm nut and the JP70 a 50 mm nut as far as I remember, I sold the jp70 short after the JP7 purchase ;)
The JP7 has the most comfortable neck of any 7 string guitar I had the chance to try :)

Anyways, I read tons of stuff on the EBMM JP necks and Im really uncertain if the JP7 neck is right for me. Some things i read sound like I would like them, others not so much. My point is, I really like well rounded necks that I can really grap with my hand, they can be very thin, but as I said, I need that certain roundedness. I have Suhr Modern with a neck that feels very flat and wide which I hate:p

I read some posts on comparisons with the Wizard neck and describing the JP necks as more rounded, but I dont have a Ibanez guitar w/ a Wizard neck, so this doesnt really help. But that you describe the JP7 as not as flat as Ibanez necks definately sounds good to my ears.

But in the end I think I will just take the risk and just buy the JP7 :p
I have desired this guitar for too long :D

The thing about comparing the neck profile with an Ibanez, is that even Ibanez uses/used different neck profiles, i have played an RG7620 a Universe and owned an RG1527, all three of them had different necks and felt quite different, of the three i found the RG1527 to be the most comfortable, it was a little thicker than the paper thin 7620 and it's actually one of my favorite necks of the Ibanez line (my top one being the JS neck), if its of any help though i bought a JP13 7 string three weeks ago, and i loved it so much that i decided to sell my 1527, best 7 string guitar i've ever played, also if you're buying used, worst case scenario if you don't like it you could probably sell it for the same amount you bought it, they hold their value pretty well.

Another thing I found with the JP necks is that there is usually a 10-15 minute break-in period for people unfamiliar with the neck shape. Most people that first played JPs (myself included) noted that it felt a bit weird at first, but after that 10-15 minute period was when the euphoria set in.

Save the cash and buy it once. It's worth the investment :)

I will be able to test a EBMM jp13 6 string in a couple of days. But I think I've read that a the JP11,12,13 and majesty have different thinner necks from the first JP guitar. Can anyone clarify this?

(I want to know if I can get a feel for the JP7 neck from trying the jp13 6 string one.)

Btw, thanks for all your replys, guys!

the neck is the same . MM confirmed that. the fretboard radius has changed over time and different radius adds a different feel overall to the JP neck (line )
they are sanded each by sand so there might feel slightly different
the neck on my Majesty feels pretty different from a friend's JP XI, but do not imagine something drastic
I'm not sure the 6 string will give you an idea about the 7 really feels, but it's a good start becasue the profile is the same.
if you hate the 6 does not necessarily means you'll not love the 7. I have friends not liking the 6 string but love the 7

some pics with my jp7 and majesty necks , but from the pics you can't tell much :)))

Thats what I was actually expecting, but you can read so many contradicting things online that I was unsure.

Sadly I cant see the pics you uploaded.
