So I looked back at a post, ( 1 page back). A post about his new JP7 and Mesa. So I came with a question. I currently have a Jackson DK2M Dinky< Boss GT-6< Ibanez ToneBlaster 100W. Not very happy with the amp. Should I go for a new Petrucci or an amp first?

( Thought I should start a post for my 100th thread :D

+1. EDIT: The Best guitar can make quite a difference even through a relatively bad amp... But a bad guitar will still sound sh***y through even the best amp.

At least, that's from my personal experience. :)

I would go the JP route, it's worth every penny. Besided with a new guitar in hand, the inspiration and creative juices flow Man, especially when it's the one that you've been wanting!

I think a crappy amp will always sound crappy whether there's a good guitar or not. However, I think a so-so guitar can actually sound great through a great amp. So, I'll say amp first, guitar second.

hmmm

its a hard one

If you really think that your guitar is halting your playing then the JP should be bought and vice versa!!

Im trying to create an equal ground and not go straight for the EBMM buy(seeing as we are on the EB board)

try and level in your own mind what should be bought first,a great guitar does make you play better IMHO because there are no imperfections in the neck etc. etc. to make it harder to play

but then again i look at it with 50/50 vision,a really good guitar and a **** amp, that doesnt add up to me

Ahh screw it buy a MM first :D:D.....

then a boogie :)

Examples:

1. I played a Luke through a Cr@te. It sounded like garbage.

2. A friend played his Gib$0n atrocity (IMHO), an orange Corvus II, through a Mesa .50Cal+ half-stack once. It sounded nice and warm. I was astonished, because that guitar generally had a horrid tone through lesser amps.

I already went through this.
I bought the guitar first.
I've been putting up with my crappy amp and will hopefully be buying something sweet pretty soon.
I think you'll get off on the guitar and temporarily forget about the amp.
If you got the amp first, you'd be dying wishing you had the JP.
Get the guitar!

I dunno - on the one hand, I'm definitely more in the camp that says a crappy guitar through a great amp can still sound great, but a great guitar through a crappy amp will always sound like crap.

On the other hand, sound aside, the instrument is the thing you actually interact with, and if you're playing great, you'll sound good even if it's coming through on a junky amp.

Howdy, neighbor.

I'd get a used JP and a decent amp. You don't have to spend a ton for good tone in an amp, but if you're not one with your guitar you suck. :)

id also vote for the guitar first. assuming you know you 100% want this guitar then if you get it first you'll be able to take your new axe amp shopping! that you'll know exactly what amp you need to get "your tone"

I don't think it would really be a mistake either way. I have two balls, and now an amp is next on the list.

Put a deposit on the guitar (order it) and then save for guitar and amp at same time... :) If not save for the EBMM.

In my mind, it's always the amp first. In fact, I'll qualify that again and say it's the speaker first!

That said, if you play a new Pet more often and get more enjoyment from it then that would be the better way to spend your money.

I always want the guitar first, because that is in your hands, it is what you are playing and it can make your playing better. But for certain, a bad amp makes a great guitar sound well.. bad. The amp is what interprets the signal from the guitar, shapes that signal, increases it, and sends it out to the speaker and that is what you hear.
A bad guitar can be difficult to play may have lousy pups etc but a good amp can interpret that signal, shape it and make it sound pretty good. IMO :)

Well if in doubt, I have a friend that has a Mesa HalfStack, so I could get my Ball and shred on that.
