What better place to get feedback on these two guitars then right here.

I've got a few EVH guitars, but have had my interest piqued lately with Petrucci's clinic on the east coast recently, and the fact that I'm a bit of a DT fan. I'd appreciate any comparison/contrasts on the two guitars from guys who have both. I know Ernie1966 has both, but I don't recall seeing him post here in some time (got my red EVH from him). My amp is a Boogie MkIV open-back half stack, so you know what I'm running. Style of music is predominantly rock with some blues thrown in for good measure. Thanks to all.

i dont own a JP6, but i have played a couple at my friends shop. to me, the JP6 is more comfortable to be played standing, and the bridge is much easier to deal with, offering the fun of a floyd without the restringing and tuning trouble. also, the JP6 has a 2 octave range if that interests you, and you can get the piezo! my personal preference is the JP6, but that is just me. compare them both and figure out what you like best, and enjoy!

you have a good point Krell...i hear so much good about the JPs, i would like to try one.

I have no EB dealers in the area...

The trem system on the JPs have me wondering (no locking nut) but it still holds a good tune, even divin' it...a big mystery to me..

Well, I have Axis SS (so not Floyd) but here's my take.
I love my axis but prefer the neck on jackson soloist for some stuff as it's abit wider.
Thus sold one axis and am selling the jackson to pay for a JP6.
I played one last weekend and loved it.
The neck is thinner but not wafer thin (is like my jackson) and the neck is that lil bit wider (again like my jackson) so I for one am exstatic I have found my "best of both worlds".
Also, I hate Floyd trems to be honest. I am not a trem freak so when the guitar goes out of tune and I have to phaff with locking nuts/fine tuners etc. etc. EEK! Much prefer the JP and Axis SS system :)

Hmmmm. Have both and really like each of them in their own way. They are entirely different beasts.

I love the Petrucci neck. Fast, fast fast. I have the piezo and that is a big plus for that guitar, the range of tones available is incredible. I like the fact that the center toggle splits the 2 pickups for a really nice clean sound, you can't get that with the EVH. The trem speaks for itself, I'm not fond of the Floyd. The Petrucci will stay in tune with the best of them.

I love the EVH tones when you go balls to the wall. The Petrucci has a slightly darker tone. The EVH is my go to guitar when I want to flat out play with some gain. I love the bridge tone, fat and in your face. I really like the look of the EVH, I think Dudley really created something unique with this one. In my humble opinion that shape is destined to be as recognizable as the LP.

Brent,
The JP model stays in tune because the tuners on the headstock actually lock so there is no need for a locking nut on the guitar. It makes string changes a breeze too. You just run your stings through the back and stick them in the post lock them down clip off the excess and tune it back up.

I used to have a floyd rose equiped jackson, now i own a JP6 and the bridge is a total marvel, I love it cuz it doenst takes me like half an hour to change the strings and it stays in tune really well, I remenber that with the jackson every single time that i grabed it i had to tune up the high E cuz i keept going flat... dunno y cuz those screws were tight as hell :D , with the jp dun have that issue, no friggin hex keys to carry around ( and loose every now and then...) and stays in tune no matter how many times i dive the low E, now of course if u got old strings thats gonna change a bit, but that u know already for shure:cool:

The EBMM headstock is a much better design.

I used to own a Floyd equpped Axis a few years back and the Floyd maintanence/string changing was just too much of a hassle for me. I loved the guitar, especially the neck, but hated the Floyd. I too was at the Pet clinic a couple of weeks ago and stopped into Pete's store with thoughts of giving the Axis another whirl as he had one in black. Played it a little bit and was reminded of how I loved the feel of it but didn't know if I could get back into the Floyd. I then was astonished by the JP6 and JP7s Pete had and started strumming away on a JP6 a little. I've seen them before but never really picked one up and played it. The neck felt really nice, fast, the control placement was nice, etc. Then I saw the clinic and heard all of the design ideas John put into the guitar and was in love (with the guitar!!!). I can't say I'm a big DT fan per se but I've always been a huge fan of Petrucci's and everytime I would sit down with guitar in hand and Petrucci's Rock Discipline in the VCR, I'd just be amazed at how awesome he is. Seeing him use that guitar live at the clinic was the clincher. I've been GASing for a JP6 since the clinic. I just love the fact that it's a non-locking bridge but can do a helluva dive. I will have one one day, oh yes, I will have one.

I believe ernie1966 gave up collecting EBMM EVH guitars and took up collecting EBMM Petrucci's. Can't get a better endorsement than that!

IMHO, as a Petrucci owner and a guy who's played Floyd's for ages, you will love the JP tremolo. I wish it were an option on every EBMM guitar... it's simply the best trem around... again, in my opinion.

EVH is a diime-a-dozen style DONE RIGHT (the EBMM way). Nothing hugely different about it.

The PET is truly something a little different. Great Bridge, great piezo, ergonomic, balanced, FASSSSST, versatile. I would consider all the great EBMM guitars IF they all we're available with THIS BRIDGE. Amazing!
