I happened to see an advertisement for this company in UK's Bass Player magazine. I can't believe how much these guys copy Fender and MusicMan basses...I'm sure BP must know about these guys?

The sad thing is, those pieces of crap (especially the StingRay copies) fill the music shops around where I live. The nearest one to my house had about 5 of those last time I went in, and let me tell you, they suck.

At least their not trying to pass it off as a real EBMM. What really could be done about this? The body shape is different, the bridge is different and the headstock is different. I would have to be pretty far away from that bass before I wouldn't be able to spot it as a cheap wannabee. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to defend them, it is possible to make a cheap Stingray-ish bass without being so blatant, other manufacturers have done so. Just trying to understand where the line gets drawn.

For the record, I do think it is despicable for a cheap (probably Chinese) manufacturer to closely copy and use another manufacturers design to sell their cheap garbage.

Yeah, the shape is a little different, but the bridge does resemble a vintage Stingray bridge, and then you have the Banana shaped control plate.

What cheap StingRay-ish basses are you referring to?

People must be buying them if music stores stock so many. For someone on a budget, it's probably a good deal, if you're into a bass for it's appearance moreso than the sound.

There are cheap basses that have the one large bridge pickup that may not look like a Stingray but I think have been designed with a Stingray in mind. I don't know if it's okay to mention other manufacturers, so I'll try not to:

Lagoona LB224
Ibeenhad ATK
Em Tee Dee Kingston

Also Washboard, Sameek and Coort have had cheap Stingray-ish basses to name a few.

What I'm saying is there are manufacturers that make cheap or cheaper alternatives that look very different but I think were designed for those who like the Stingray and can't afford it. These "Vintage" basses are blatant and obvious rip offs. My question is how close do they have to come before it is considered a legal issue?

Once again, not trying to defend these guys or make any kind of point, I'm just curious.

Actually when they mentioned the 5 string in the video I was looking at the body and thought it was a SR before I looked at the headstock. So I would say it seems to me that it is pretty bad.

Reminds me of a fitting definition of "perfect pitch" I once heard ... when you pitch the thing onto the bonfire, and it lands right on top.

Sorry to annoy you guys but these have been around for a very long time (at least 2003). They do a five string which looks like the current Classic (or sub).

They also do a lefty - my son has one as his back up bass to his Stingray. It sounds like a passive StingRay. V cheap tuners and stuff but looks and sounds quite nice (as a cheap back up or starter bass).

Just remember for those who are lefties - the lowest priced Ray is around £1250 new in the UK - my lad got his copy on Ebay for about £150. It's better than his original first bass, a cheap P Bass copy by the same firm.

But of course - the StingRay is his pride and joy - he only got that when it was clear he was gonna be a serious bassist - and that he is!

see here is the thing, its not right and it is stealing but....you guys state sidereally dont seem to get how much we pay for our gear over here even a second hand sub will cost me more than a second hand ray will cost you and thats if your lucky enough to get one.i am not giving out,i understand wht this is and dont have a problem.

but my first bass was a cheap fender copy, only because i could not get a cheap stingray copy.every young kid who buys a cheap copy and then goes on to become a player will dump the cheap copy and buy the real thing when he can get the money for it.

its not right but they do serve a purpose, the sterling range are wonderful i have played a few but they still cost an arm and a leg over here.So the thing is if EBMM built a really really cheap bass for this market they would be lashed by everyone and the bottom line is i hope they never go into that market.

just remember most of the players who but these want the real thing and will end up getting one some day.

its not right but if it makes kids end up with a real stingray some day then is it such a bad thing.

just thinking out loud,i could be wrong .....i usually am

Well, Europeans make some nice basses that are not(or are rarely) available over in the States. Status basses, and Vigier models are very expensive over here....and Warwicks have also gone up in price because of shipping to the States.

Yes but I think you missed the point, shipping cost and such I understand and will never moan about as it naturally does work both ways.you can also buy a knock off warwick too if you want but most of the time its just a stepping stone to the real thing.for less than 200 you can buy a copy ray or fender that is playable and will sound sort of ok.when I was a kid 200 quid would get you a really bad bass that you could hardly play and could turn you off ever taking it further.olp however where really nice and I nearly bought the tony levins model only it was selling at 549.
