I saw the Elton John/Billy Joel concert a few years ago, and yeah, this dude was playing a MM. You could totally tell the difference when compared to Joel's bassist's Fender.

FWIW I saw/heard Maceo Parker last friday and the band was driven
by Marcus Parker on drums and Rodney Curtis on an SR5 [HS, SVT, &
4x10]. PR photos show Curtis with a Lakie, but I spoze that he's very
recently 'seen the light' ? Waaaaaaay baddass show BTW.

Bob has been Elton's bassist for 20 years or so, and MM basses are all I've seen him play. Someone posted a sick Buckeye Burl SR5 that was made for him not long ago. BTW, he's a great player..

I have seen Bob Birch play several times with Elton John (in televised stuff) - his regular bass seems to have been an SR5H blue dawn, similar to DTG's but with black pearloid pg rather than white. Great sound (I'm pretty sure he was using single coil centre position on the switch).

I'm sure I read somewhere that he had a green MM bass of some description but Mr John didn't let him use it - I am guessing that instrument colours may be important to some major artists - anyway you can't get much better than blue dawn IMHO!
