I'm a sucker for EMG's but love my JP way too much to mess it up too bad. I have looked into the EMG X's but am hazy about them. I know if I put in the standard ones then I have to change the pots and add pickup rings (not happin'). Does anyone know how bad I would have to mess with the guitar to put these in? I also know the JP pickups are mounted to the body and normal EMG's "float" (again don't want to mess with the guitar). My hope is that you can just drop the X's in. Please give your thoughts. And yes I know I'm going to get roasted for removing the d-sonic but I really don't care for the tone (as I understand JP dropped them as well so I don't feel as bad).
Thanx.

I'd look at DiMarzio D Activators. They're voiced to sound like EMGs (but lotsa folks like them better) but they're passive and the standard DiMarzio shape, so it'd be a direct drop in replacement. Wouldn't even need new pots.

I've never put EMGs in a guitar that didn't come with them so i can't help you with that, but I'm sure some other folks who can will be along shortly.

Actually that is one option I'm also looking at. I do like the sound of the 81 but if there are pickups I could get that have that sound and will drop in then please give more opinions.

Justin Longshore from Through The Eyes of The Dead put EMGs in one of his JPs. (JP7 I believe) There's an interview with him on sevenstring.org not sure if he talked about it on there. He didn't have too much trouble doing it and seems to like it a lot better FWIW.
