EQ Stopped working on my stingray

I just bought a xxx 4 string stingray and wow was i excited. Got it home and after playing it for a while noticed the eq dials were hardly doing anything. The strings look fairly rusty so i will replace them (but dont think that this would cause such a lack of change in the eq). I'll change the battery and strings tomorrow and see what this does but is this a common fault?

The guy i bought it from had it in his bedroom out of its case and unplayed for the last 18 months. The volume dial works fine.

Any ideas?

I just bought a car and it won't run. Is this a common fault?

I guess tomorrow I'll see if there's any gas in the tank....

FWIW, I recently had a stingray that the tone controls weren't working, but the volume control was. My tech adjusted the battery connections and it was fixed.
