Hi there I have a problem with the Tremolo of my EVH. After pressing the arm down and let it back to normal position, the strings go sharp, they are to high.
I already changed the screws which adjust the height of the strings since the had a little slot after the years. I oiled the knife edges, but not too good results. Slightly better.
My last chance: I noticed that the knife edges of the trem base plate are having some scratches and the chrome came off, maybe this is the reason that the trem does not go back into exact zero position.

Does the tremolo need to be parallel to the top of the body? I have a slighter higher base plate on the e1 string side than on the low E side. But i have that on ma tom Anderson too and it´s perfect in tune after divebombing.
So my last idea (the locking nut is good!) is the worn base plate.

Is the base plate with the MM logo available as spare part?
Thanx for your help

Problems that it could be:

-Your locking nut is slipping.
-Your bridge isn't resting snugly against the top of the guitar.

If it's the first one. You may need to get new clamps for your locking nut.

If it's the second one and frankly, I'd check this one first, you need to tighten the trem springs on the back of your guitar so that the trem is pulled against the body by the springs when the strings are tuned up.

In order for your strings to go sharp as you describe, there has to be some string movement somewhere. Unless you hear a grinding or clunking noise, the trem is probably working fine. To that extent, you may have changed out the pivot posts prematurely.

Make sure your trem rests tightly against the body of your guitar and that will probably solve the problem. Then, check you locking nut. Make sure all the screws and such on the bridge are tight too. After that, your problem kind of defies logic...

good luck.

well...

Thanx Hbucker, but as mentioned in my post. My Locking nut is good (detuned the strings at the headstock with the nut locked, and the tuning of the guitar stayed!!)

My trem is flat on the surface of the body. I already changed the pivots.
Everything is oiled as I mentioned, the only visible thing is the base plate.

My question was if somebody knows if it is available as a single part?
I won´t buy a new trem because of some worn knife edges.

No - they don't make this kind of trem anymore. The Music Man Floyd as manufactured by Gotoh has undergone some design changes since the days of the EVH. If it were only worn knife edges however, it's very easy to correct them yourself with a little juditious filing. If you really want to know if it's the knife edges, set the trem up to float, and see if it can hold it's tuning... Note, the trem is originally designed - as per Eddie's spec - to SIT ON THE BODY of the guitar; you should not be able to do a pull-up, and the plate should be neatly parallel to the body.

BTW, the trem posts can wear too, especially if you've adjusted them with full string tension on...

hope this is some help :)

Sounds like you need a new Floyd. You must play the crap out of that thing.
