EVH with blank neckplate?

Ran into a guy selling an EBMM EVH that was very nice but it had a blank neckplate - no EBMM logo and no serial number, just a blank piece of metal. It obviously raised a flag with me. He said he'd purchased it used that way. Everything else about the guitar seems legit.

I was wondering - does EBMM put the serial number anywhere else on the guitar - like in the neck pocket or one of the control cavities? Is it possible to get an EBMM neckplate for it?

Naturally my first inclination is to think the guitar has been stolen if it has the original serial number replaced with a blank plate. That's why I'm wondering if the serial number is anywhere else on the guitar - anyone know if the number is also in the neck pocket or pickup cavity? Figured if I could get a number on the guitar I could find out its history or if its been stolen.

The owner says he bought it that way and never realized the neckplate was supposed to have a number - who knows if he's being honest about its history.

All the EVH models had a serial # on the neckplate. There were some Steve Morse models with a serial # stamped on the headstock, but the neckplate had the MM logo.

The only thing that could be in the neck pocket is a builder name (mine has "Sam" listed -- Jon, tell Sam he done good! LOL!), and date of build.

This would/could also be on the neck as well (where it goes into the pocket, etc.)

If you could get that information, perhaps that could help out. Otherwise, I would say run.
