When did it start? How did it evolve?

It's simply the best. And my rig is specifically tuned to having it available all the time.

TELL ME MORE!

did petrucci ever have piezos on his old ibanezs?

Yes, he did. There was a prototype built for him with a Wilkinson piezo bridge that he used for the acoustic parts of Home from Scenes from a memory. Built in the LA custom shop:

It was sold on Evilbay for a little under $5000 if memory serves me right.

Wow. Just under $5K?!

I agree with the first post, the piezo on my Pet is *amazing* and I, too, have built my rig largely around it.

Way to go EBMM!

I thought they put one in a Trans Gold EVH hard tail for Eddie during the Balance tour. I know he used one on Can't Stop Loving you... (before the PE**EY showed up)

yup, definitely. It's name was the Desert Camo. Must be some info online somewhere

EDIT: My brain still functions amazingly well for all this non-functional information...
Rich Harris from ibanezrules sold it, here's the info he put on his website when he did:

"JPM Desert Camo - this is the LACS built full custom for John that he used to record "HOME" on "Scenes From A Memory", among other things. Wilkinson piezo bridge and the straight non tilt headstock are unique features on this custom, but it does have the back-relieved lower horn and Dan Lawrence hand painted graphic which is standard. John sold this originally when he sold all his Ibanez on his website. Excellent condition with 3 small 2-3mm edge chips in the black side [super easy touch up], JP does keep his guitars clean. In the M100 case JP shipped it in. ** $4750**"

Wow you can actually see how the JP evolved from that model. Similar stuff going on there.

All EBMM with Piezo have that little black box on the side with the 2 jack input and what I guess is an EQ setting that can be made with a screw driver.

The ASS haven't got that little black box and the EQ adjustment can not be done without removing the back plate.

I already started a thread maybe a year ago about that to get an official explanation why there is different preamp and why some guitars have the toggle switch (ASS, JP, LUKE) and the others haven't got (Silhouette, AL, Silhouette Special)

Now I could be wrong but I understand that the ASS was the first one to be Piezo equipped and the others took advantage of the JP enhancement

I still don't understand why some have the switch (mag, both, Piezo) and why some haven't got it. I'm just very curious :D

Some more info would be awsome if we could get it. This is the first time time I hear the term JP enhancement.

excuse me I'm just French ;)

It might not be an enhancement but more an improvement and a smaller/optimized circuit

I hear you man. I kind of like the fact that when you look a the back of the ASS there is wood instead of the box. But it is all about the tone right.
