I had this june 1990 SR4 bass for a while. Beautiful birds-eye neck but I had to replace the frets.
It has 3 standard MM tuners + a hipshot D-tuner (says Schaller on the key itself).
The D-tuner has diferent monting screws locations than the standard keys and looks bigger like a 70's Fender key.
Anyway, I took the keys off before I started the fret job and... there it was...
the only holes I found for the E string tuner were the ones used to mount the D-tuner. No original holes for the standard MM key.
My guess is that it had to come like this from the factory.
Does any of you guys have any info on this?
