Some forum members visited the factory - one observation was that in the manufacturing process, the operator applied a small quantity of Birchwood Casey gunstock oil - wiped it on with a kitchen towel if my memory serves me well. Literally wiped it straight off with another paper towel. Repeated the same process with the Gunstock wax - wipe it on - then wipe it straight off.

I once applied the oil and let it stand for a while - bad mistake - it went all gloopy!!

This sounds about right. I did my Sub 1 after sanding off the paint. I did one coat using a paper towel. Waited 45 seconds and wiped it off. Waited 45 minutes and repeated. I waited a week and used some zymol carbon wax (since none of the 25 stores I visited had birchwood casey wax).

I refinished a non-ebmm neck.....sanded off the paint, read the directions on the tru-oil.......baaaaaah. Never do that. I put on 3 coats and let them completely cure. I'd sand it off and start again, but the guitar's on craigslist, so I won't bother.
