Hi, I was wondering if anyone here has heard of there being any fake or knockoff versions of the Music Man John Petrucci JP7 Mystic Dream guitar (the one with the pre D-Sonic pickups, made in 2005 I believe). I can get one of these for $1000 right now but I'm sure there must be some sort of catch (stolen, fake, etc.), it seems too good to be true!

I don't see how that's too good to be true. I sold a Pearl Redburst one a year or two ago for a friend for like $1050.
There was a blue one with EMGs (non matching headstock; not sure if there was a piezo or not) that somebody couldn't get rid of for $900.

Whether or not it has a piezo (which you didn't mention) will affect the price. Plus, pre-d-sonic is like 3 PU changes ago, lol, so that's pretty old.

Seems legit to me. Just make sure you get lots of pictures and ask for the serial number if you're not sure. You can ask on here for its build date once you have the serial number just to make sure it's real.

Oh wow I didn't know that they were that cheap nowadays! I played the same one at a local music store and it was beautiful.. And yes this one does have the piezo electronics. How do these guitars compare with the newer JP models that are out now (JPX, BFR)? Are the pickups that much different from the Crunch Lab?

I got a fully loaded 2004 JP6 MD for $600 but had to do a lot of work to it. You don't see them go for that kind of price very often. Structurally it was all ok and I enjoyed working on it. Details are in the hyperlink in my signature.

If you really want to make sure, get the serial number and call customer service...or post it in the serial number thread.
