Okay -

I just watched that AND then Jerry Reed & Chet Atkins version. I have come to a conclusion - I'm really not very good at guitar playing.

Seriously - I could not believe how good Jerry Reed is. WOW.

Yeah! Me too! But I knew I sucked a long time ago. :p

Great picking technique... for one string.

He should be able to play the sh*t out of the "Pulp Fiction" theme or any surf song ever written.

Unfortunately, he's spent zero time on anything else except playing a few chords. Watch his other videos like the one where he plays a duet with himself.
I know he does not profess to be John Petrucci but still.......better left unsaid.

Its a weird and pretty useless talent/technique in the end.

He reminds me of what Greenwizard said about Petrucci's biggest nightmare is picking so fast that he plays one long continous note...thats this guy.

OK...I actually found that interesting......

Truthfully, it is not something musical.....and he did not do anything other than pick the top string....

But, that was incredibly fast. It reminds me of the fastest drummer contests...some of those cats can't play a beat....but, they can double bass kick fast as lightning....

The king of that contest is Lars Ulrich. . . . but I digress...

The whole "fastest player" thing is ridiculous to me. Sure, you can pick XXX notes in a second, but what does that add musically to anything?? I think it was stated before . . just because you can play fast doesn't mean you're good.

I've looked at the you tube links on this thread and some of the other you tube vids that pop up on the page.

I remember many years ago when 8 bit computer games came out the "music" was ... ... tinny, poor but we put up with it - cast your mind back to the pac man music.

When I heard some guy playing sooo fast I thought "clever" initially - then I realized that his sound was akin to the Pac man music - I smiled to myself and hit the stop button.

Bring back Paul Kossoff I say (I wish !!) - he'd slow it back down that's for sure.

58 notes/second... The question is: who cares? :D

I still prefer this kinda things...

What is "musical" to you might not be "musical" to others.

I think it is an amazing skill and a cool tool to have in a tool box. I thought that was some amazingly fast picking. If what he is after is the world record then I hope he records it digitally and just counts the peaks.

When I saw this and read the replies (I was really amazed at how many there were) I kept thinking back to an Open Ears article by Steve Morse. The article was, "What Guitar Players Say and What They Really Mean".

What they say:
He can only play fast.

What they mean:
I can't play that fast.

A bonus quote
What they say:
He can only play slow.

What they mean:
I wish I could get my guitar to sound that good.

If Keith is following this thread maybe he will come along with some of his favorites from that article. Or perhaps, new thread time!

I could understand mild jealousy from some people if the man had great left hand technique too, but he really doesn't.. and he's mildly arrogant about a useless skill. I don't see how it is useful if you can't play anything?

Anyone could pick that fast, it just takes practice.. and I know a lot of players that probably could, but the ones with any sense don't want to. I feel pretty confident in my playing abilities(I'm not the best, but I've worked hard over the years), and really don't see the point in being able to pick that fast. Besides, there's one thing about picking fast, but picking fast while making good use of dynamics is a whole other story.. and it's also something that's impossible to do at that speed anyway.

Also, there's gotta be rules to this "fastest in the world" thing. He's not really PLAYING anything, just picking. It's basically just white noise.

guinness world records fastest guitar player

The current guinness world records of the fastest guitar player is José del Rio (journey into the fourth dimension) who played 'Duelling Banjos' at a speed of 250 bpm. :D

Interesting thread. I can definitely say that I can't play as fast as I used to, but I'm a WAY better guitarist than I used to be. I guess that's sort of off topic. Since the topic is the fastest player, well good for him. Really. That's his bag. I ask myself, what can I do that isn't anyone's else bag. That is a much bigger challenge for me than learning to play fast.
