I just bought a Stingray 5 (1 pickup). I use to have a Sterling. I must say though, since they both have coil taps, my favorite setting is single coil, in the middle. Kind of has that Jazz bass sound. I know Dave LaRue says he uses this setting alot for fingerstyle and parallel setting for slapping.
Though I did play a gig the other night. First gig with my new bass, I was experimenting with all the sounds of Series/Single/Parallel. But when playing fingerstyle Single Coil and Parallel for Slapping.

For EQ settings, I boosted the Mids all the way. That's one thing I like about this preamp is that the mid control is very musical sounding at 10. Not too honky.

I have a single H 5 string 'ray. I use parallel for mostly everything -- i play fingerstyle and slap in many songs. I have the treble just a RCH above the center detent, the mids and bass at 3/4 full ... i use single coil for quiet songs that are just fingerstyle. Of course, the amp settings make a big difference...

Treble, anything past a RCH in Single and Parallel gets too bright and clacky. But in Series, I boost the treble about 1/4 the way because Series wiring is usually bassier a deeper for any pickup.

On my single H SR5, since I have flats on it, it stays in parallel with the treble slightly cut, bass slightly boosted, and the mids boosted or at the detent depending on what i'm playing.

Some favorites:

#1 used for full-range fingerstyle tone: Series (cause it gives the upper range extra balls), bass boosted a tad, mids flat or slightly cut, treble slightly cut.

#2: for more middy-growly fingerstyle tone: Single-coil, bass boosted 1/2 way, mids slightly boosted, treble slightly cut.

I do agree that the EQ is great -- it IS very musical, whatever you do with it. The bass boost has mucho balls-- a little goes a long way.

I also will often get a good amp setting with the bass flat, then tweak from there.
