Okay, my track record for starting threads that have much the same subject matter as past threads is pretty good. This one's probably no different. I was driving to work this morning (90-mile commute) and I was listening to some Luke stuff and listening for changes in his tone over the years. What is you favorite of his tones and the era in which they were played?

I really like the tone from "Fahrenheit" and "The Seventh One". They are even different from each other. He did an album in the mid 80's with a project called "The Far Corporation". Anyone remember that? I picked up the vinyl from a music store back when it was first released. There was a couple versions of "Stairway To Heaven" and I thought they were fantastic. Big Luke tone and playing with with this really cool big Phil Collins drumming that was done by Simon Phillips maybe? The vocalist was Bobby Kimball and David Paich played keys. There were 2 Far Corporation albums released; I believe. This one was called "Division One".

There' also a youtube vid of Luke in a studio. The tone there is crazy good and his humor, especially when the little girl comes in the room, is a highlight. Luke is a true master of tone and I have followed his stuff since I first heard "99". I was about 13 at the time....

Anyone else care to share?

I really love the tone Luke got on the Kingdom of Desire album... it really was a great guitar sound.. this was just prior to his switch to EBMM... I loved the tone of his old Valley Arts guitars just as much as his EBMM's... it's mostly in the player anyway... he was also using a 3 channell Bradshaw preamp at that time... great tones...:)

I have always liked the tone on all of Turnback - I love the whole album although I know not many do. The latest album (Falling in Between) has an amazingly heavy tone for Luke - the title track is fantastic.
A bit random - but theres a short piece on the Live in Amsterdam DVD/CD (Theme from Dune I think), where Luke is accompanying a Paich Solo. Very straty and emotive - worth checking out.

There are a lot of Luke tones I like, but as wacky as it may seem my all time favorite is his unaccompanied "The Christmas Song" from his Santamental album. Luke, I love your arrangement on that one. In your liner notes you said that Larry Carlton helped a bit with the hip chords. It inspired me to learn my own version of that classic Mel Torme song. Old Mel knew what he was doing! Sorry if this is a little off topic.

Clean tone...mostly from intro to Little Wing on all that eL Grupo stuff. I think Luke awsome when he does the Jazz chord comping stuff....

All Lukes stuff kills but I particularly like his heavier sounds on Luke and Falling in Between. His tone on the DVD with LC from Paris is sweet and is a nice compliment to Carltons tone. Cresent and Pretzel Logic from the Tone Center comps are phenomenal as well.

I don't know if anyone saw the FIB tour - the start of Lukes solo spot was a kinda jazz comp thing - clear inspiration from Larry Carlton, and simply jaw dropping. The tone at the gig I saw was stunning - can't wait for the new DVD.
