Today I finally got a Lonestar head to use with my jp.
I really loved the warm sound, after playing on the lonestar I couldn't stand listening to the dual rectifier, even if it's a grat amp!!
does anybody else use this amp with their jp?
because I have a question..
as everybody knows, this amp hasn't got as much distortion as a rectifier or a mark 4, though it still has a very nice warm sound, perfect for playing fusion or greg howe stuff.
but sometimes I need that punch that the lonestar doesn't seem to have, so I was thinking about getting a bb preamp to give more "power" to the sound, what do you think about that?
would a bb preamp+lonestar drive enable me to play some dream theater?
o should I also consider other pedals?

congrats on your amp! I was really considering one of those for a while.

I don't think you'll get what you need for Dream Theater.
I would guess you'd need a different pedal.

Here's Andy Timmons playing a BB on a Lonestar.

anyway, I must say the bb sounds awesom on the lonestar, and I think it would be perfect for the style I play (I'm more into fusion than metal, but I like to play symphony x and dream theater too)...
so I'll be getting a bb preamp for sure...but what kind of pedal should I be looking for to get an actual hi-gain modern distortion?
maybe a keeley ds1?

do you still own the recto?

never had a recto, this morning I went to the music store to get a new amp, and I played on a lot of amps, and in the end I chose the lonestar.
I didn't choose the recto because even if I found it great for shredding and heavy stuff, I just prefered the tone of the lonestar, that I think will be perfect with the bb preamp.
now to get a good distortion out of it to play more heavy stuff I have to put drive+gain to the max, but it does get a bit muddy, so I really need a pedal to boost it up

If one day I'll own both I'll take your advice :D
any ideas on what kind of pedal I should be looking for, besides the bb preamp that I would use for my fusion-lazy-guitarist-improvised stuff :p
I was thinking of using a keeley ds1 on the lead channel

I love Andy Timmons' tone with a BB preamp kicked in with his Lonestar! I'm going to try out a bunch of amps this weekend too. I'm getting bored with my Rectoverb combo these days...

hi adam!
I suggest you try out the lonestar, it's reaaaaaly sweet with the jp!
it's really a great amp, though it needs a little help from an external pedal if you intend to do heavy stuff, bot that's not a big problem, it's got a wonderfull vibe when you hit on the strings with the pick

Congrats on the Lonestar, man !

I'm not too much into Mesa's stuff, but the Lonestar definitely has some flavor to it that makes it one of my top 3 "next-to-buy" amps.
For the clean and the hi-gain stuff I'm already well enuff equipped, but the warmth in the OD sounds of the Lonestar, there are some nuances I'd even prefer over the 2nd mode of the 1st channel of my Einstein...

*drooool* :D

Hey Phazer.

i've got a lonestar 2x12 combo that i use with my JP & Axis. as you say, great warm tones from it. i really like the second channel dirtied up. drive & gain set at 3 & 430 respectfully. for heavier sections i use a v-twin and a keeley DS1. they should help you get the sound you're after

as I thought the bb preamp wouldn't be enough to cover heavy stuff, and the problem is that here in italy it's impossible to find the bb preamp or modded ds1 so I just have to buy them from internet and hope they are what I'm looking for.
I already had a keeley ds1 though, I used it on a jcm800 head and it sounded really good.
do you use the ds1 on top of the amps drive?

Congrats on the lonestar but you should have gotten a roadster.......................

the roadster is a great amp, I really love the idea of having 4 channels, but I'm not really a huge fan of the rectifier sound...

anyways, I may have a sponsorship comming up :D
