I'm still working on the 3 finger technique... I've seen many bassists use the three finger technique in this order
index, middle, ring.. repeat..
Im trying to really nail down going back and forth with the 3 finger technique
for example
index,middle,ring,middle,index,middle,ring..

i just go ring/middle/index most of the time and sometimes i find my fingers in reverse on certain songs...typically my ring starts

pick is the way to go for speed as far as i'm concerned:p

Well, you could always use your index finger as a pick. I've done that many times when I've needed a quick and easy speed boost. It's kind of cool to mix picking in-between my slap/pop techniques. And it sounds different than standard picking and finger picking- another tool in the box.

Actually, I've been trying those felt picks lately; they've got a cool sound too.

If it sounds good- it is good!

my mistake, dont know why i wrote "index, middle, ring" maybe its because thats the way we ussually look at out fingers, in terms of order, but yes I start with my ring finger for picking with 3 fingers

I don't know why, but my brain malfunctions when I use "Ring, Middle, Index". It works fine when I'm scaling down the neck, but when I'm scaling up the neck- my left hand doing- "Index, Middle, Ring, Pinky," I have trouble coordinating that with my right hand doing: Ring, Middle, Index. It's like my hand fights my brain- It wants to start with the Index on the right hand when I'm going up, and start with the Ring when I'm going down. The trouble is, I only have half the speed when I'm starting with the Index. Erg! I'll keep working at it, but I'm still most comfortable leading with my thumb- thumb, Index, thumb, Middle.

For the first seven or so years of playing, I was a pick guy exclusively. About three years ago I switched to fingers and I'm very happy.

I use the tried and true two-finger approach (index and middle), but I prefer to lead with my middle finger, probably because it's quite a bit longer. I tried going with the three-finger approach, but the length of my middle finger always gets in the way of the other two and makes for a difficult balance.

For those of you using the two finger approach:
Do you keep the alteration between fingers consistent with the beat? Meaning, if you start say with the middle finger on the 1, then the index finger on the 1+, do you keep it that way (downbeat/middle, offbeat/index) throughout, regardless of pauses or string changes, like with a pick?

I recently observed that I've developed my technique so that I do not use fingers consistently with the beat, which allows me to relativle fast skip strings and such, but has me stumped on more complex rhythms, or when requiring a certain accentuation patterns especially on offbeats. It became pretty obvious when our guitarist asked me to play a continuous 8th note line without accentuating the 1 but accentuating the 2 and the 4. I had a hard time doing that, until I forced myself to not alter the picking sequence of my fingers.
