Finish for Axis Sport

Question guys (MM Gals Rock Too!),

I have, or I had, well I have it, but it's in 1000 pieces, an Axis Sport. I started messing with it because of it's horribly chipped surface and due to my extreme stupidity, ruined it. Long story. Rainstorm, Tee-shirt, its all a haze.

The first thing I noticed after it being the best guitar I ever had, or could hope to have, was the finish.

The finish kept getting dings and chips, etc. I mean, I usually KNOW when I bounce a guitar into something. These just seemed to materialize. Never heard or felt them.

Now, I Obviously did it. No dispute. But the finish chipped like a Red Candy Apple. Which seemed to me to be a very fragile finish, despite it's deep beauty.

I've hear nothing from anyone here other than "The finish is STURDY. " etc.

But does anyone else experience this Candy Apple fragility on those guitars? And do the new "Super" sports have the same type finish? (I have 2 on the way and am going to change how I handle them).

I've read the Nitrocellulose arguements and California law (isn't nitrocellulose explosive?) so I'm just curious.

AND, if one DOES chip the finish, can it be fixed? How?

Didn't mean to rain on anyones love of MM finishes. After all, how many of you sold 4 of your best guitars and 3 of your guns to buy 2 more of them? What's next, the car?

I had a bass player that bought a blue dawn sterling after he saw my blue dawn luke. I talked him into removing the pickguard to show off the beauty more. And he was extremely pleased with the look of it sans pickguard. He just screwed the screws back in as you really couldn't notice them from more than a foot away.

about 2 weeks later he brings this octave pedal to practice and as he was bending down to put it on the floor it nicked his bass putting a screw size chip in it. He debated about sending it back for repairs but decided to just screw another screw in it.

I remember thinking, "Glad it's not my guitar".

Things happen no matter how careful you are, but I'm at the point now where i'd rather get a ding in my 4runner, than one of my ebmm's.

What I learned was to live with the dings.

It was for redoing the finish myself that ended up ruining the whole guitar. I was a fool.

Now, I'd gladly accept a razor scratched MM if I could just play it.

Anyways, I appreciate it now, and also have Axis Sport parts to sell.

I might even put its tuners on one of the super sports that are coming my way. Don't know if I like those pearl tuners. We'll see. And the Volume and Tone knob look cheap as hell, whereas the sport alone had chrome (although I bought ebony).

Don't suppose one of those parts is a maple/maple neck?

That unfortunatly is what got ruined.

I was working outside on the body. I had the neck wrapped in tee-shirt so it "wouldn't get ruined". It was at the bottom of my gym bag.

It started raining. I threw all in the bag and came inside.

I didn't think/notice that the water collected at the bottom, soaked up by the t-shirt, soaked up by the UNFINISHED neck. I didn't know that little fact.

Anyways, it swelled up to twice its size. Dried out. The frets are popped up in their middles. The 'top' is shorter than the 'bottom'. Besides, it's not birds-eye.

Anyways, if you were ever wondering, that story is the WORST that you can possible do to your MM.

But it's been a good experience. It made me go without a Musicman for 6 months, which meantime had me trying many other guitars, none of which come close. So I'm now coming home, keep the tea on the kettle...

Geez Lew...spare us for God's sake! Has he not been through enough already?!?! I cannot bare to look at that poor EB..... Just kidding....

I know how you feel going without your EBMM for awhile. Happened to me over the summer. I was in Iraq for awhile without my JP's.....I didn't have any form of guitar/bass/banjo/lute/ukalele/tennis racket.....just air guitar my friend. Lots and lots of air guitar. I ran into a servicemember over there who had a guitar with strings sooooo worn out, it was like playing a tennis racket, but, man, we played for hours. It felt good to play. We had such a good time. I got a total of 3 hours of guitar in for my time over there. Made a friend in the brave Marine (still there BTW and doing fine...sent him some EBMM strings... ) but, I couldn't wait to get home. Then off to California at short notice...then my OLP got busted in transit, bought an Ibanhad POS, met Kbaim, played his Axis SS, and had fun.

So, when you get yours, you will be back in full swing. Lesson learned. Just keep it out of the rain. Dings happen and that is life. I haven't dinged any of mine yet, as I don't gig or play on stage, but, time is coming soon that I will and I am sure it is going to happen, but, I call 'em "war wounds"......they are a right of passage.

You wouldn't see much anyways.

A body that is sanded. Electronics and accessories all in a draw. Screws and all.

And a neck. From far away, almost looks normal. Get closer, looks dull. Look at the frets, their a bit raised in the middle. Can put a nail under them. Look at the line that seperates the maple (very hard to see initially) is easy to see, and the top thin piece of maple is like 2 mm shorter than the rest. So the frets stick out over the edges a bit.

It's burned, scarred in my head. I'll bury it soon after the wake. No flowers please. You can send money to your favorite charity: MM
