I just got and idea. What if MusicMan made a signature bass for maybe Tony Levin or John Myung or someone else?

I would buy that in a second:D

Well, I heard the Bongo 6 could've been a Myung Signature model, but he didn't want a bass to carry his name. I guess he's just too modest :p

Ernie Ball...that's the only signature I need on my bass.

Edit: Come to think of it, I don't think my Bongo says Ernie Ball on it...:D

AFAIK, the signature guitars were developed by EBMM together with the artist. The basses were developed by the EBMM team and the artists play stock versions of them. So why put an artist name on them? Just because someone plays them?

Who said the artist would play a stock model?

Maybe Tony L would be like to have some very specific features? I still like the idea...

That.

I asked Tony Levin about that. He was sitting with Luke, John Petrucci, all these rock stars with sig models and I pointed out that he was (a) a bigger rock star than any of those guys (to me) and (b) he could probably talk Sterling into a signature model, couldn't he?

He talked a little about the OLP, but basically said he played stock basses and those were just perfect for him. He wouldn't change anything. True to form, that night he picked up a stock SR5 off the rack and played the living bejeezus out of it. Sounded just like Tony Levin, too.

Sterling can better address this, but we've had this discussion before and to paraphrase the boss, the Stingray is what it is. Leo designed and BP refined. Whose name you gonna put on THAT?

Every now and then, you see an artist get a one-off instrument, special in some way. Signature basses? Never say never.....but Stingrays have been around 30-plus years and are doing fine without it.

Well said...

By the way, did you shake Tony's hand? If so, have you washed your hand yet?

I have been a Tony Levin fan since the first Peter Gabriel solo album. He is such a big part of Peter's "sound".

First off the Bongo six was never offfered to anyone for a signature model so that info regarding Myung is totally false. I made the first one for him but it's a BOngo.

If there is a bassist that can bring the design and marketing push (in that order) then I would probably do it.

In the mean time its about the brand and the product and signature models unless you get lucky (which we have) or actually use credibility (which we do) are very difficult to sell. THe retailers only have so many hooks and ther are tons of sig basses on clearance racks and threrefore dealers get hesitant ot buy them.

Not a potential customer of sig basses since EBMM spoilt me by letting me spec my own bass but I'm not against the idea either.

I agree with Mynan, A signature model would mean nothing to me! The only thing I care about is the quality of an instrument. I love my EBMM bass and don't need anyone else to endorse it. Big Poppa is the man!

I remember at the openhouse (some of the best 2 days of my life) talking to Tony Levin about this and if I recall he said modestly - what would I know about designing an instrument!, I know what I like and I like Music man and the stingray and he has since the late 70s.

Myung had a Yamaha signature instrument ... I've wondered what happened to that relationship. I couldn't find the instrument on their website.

From the outside looking in, its hard for me to imagine Yamaha would be happy Myung isn't using their instruments anymore.
