so my 20th, which i got yesterday (thanks pete), is my first 5 string ever. ive actually never played a 5 before. sure, a few minutes at a buddies house or noodling at a local shop... but id never really sat down with one.

given my lack of experience w/ a 5 i was worried and excited all at the same time. obviously starting w/ a 20th sr5 is a pretty awesome luxury.

My 20th sr5 is the single H model. why did i pick a single H?

1) jack wouldnt stop talking about his (IM chats etc as well). he gave it a raving review
2) i really wanted to try the new "enhanced series" position

so how'd my first hour w/ a 5 string go?

i must say it was pretty good. i was worried about fumbling on the B string. losing track of where I am... hitting the E instead of the A and all that stuff that comes with having another string chillin. it really wasnt that big of an issue. ya, sometimes i get confused or something but its not nearly as much of an adjustment as i thought it would be.

other things to get used to...

the size of the neck. well, its quite a difference as compared to my beloved sterlings. this is an obvious thing that i honestly didnt think about. i need soem practice to get used to the bigger neck. even tho its wider than im used to its still a very comfortable neck and felt great!

string spacing... not too much of an adjustment for finger style or pick playing. i didnt try much slapping/popping stuff. i figured i had enough to get used to and was having so much fun i kinda forgot to give it a whirl. but for the stuff i was noodling on it was just fine.

the low B is a super cool sound :) lol. Ya, i know overuse is lame - but ya know... i had to hear it go boom and smile a few times :)

the G actually sounds super nice and crisp. that was a random thing that impressed me. the G was one of the last things i thought id take note of. maybe the stock G on a 5er is a diff guage. but its a nice crisp sound. really impressed me actually.

the pup positions...

well, i was having so much fun playing this awesome new bass that by the time i thought about really comparing the pup positions it was pretty late and i decided to play unplugged to avoid cops showing up. ill report more when i get a chance.

overall i was tweaking knobs and changing positions a lot so i dont have a real flavor of any of them. but no matter what position i was in or what the eq was set to this thing sang. all greatness really.

i must admit i was worried about jumping into the 5 string world. but im really happy i did... esp. since i got one awesome 5er :) after playing i went to the patio to have a smoke and was smiling. i was that stoked. i was a bit scared a 5 string and i wouldnt get along but im enjoying it a lot so far! so much newness is rad. new things to work on, challenges and all that stuff that makes playing fun

as far as the bass itself... well, u know its flawless. super solid bass. neck feels great, the finish is perfect, the action was just right. but u knew all that cuz thats how MM rolls yo. LoL. one cool bonus was that while playing i looked down at the high frets/neck pocekt area and notice the lil binding strip thing. thats was sweet... mid scale practice i noticed it which was a pretty sweet. its quite a handsome lil line :)

anywho... hopefully this chronicle of my first hour w/ a 5 string made sense.

im liking it a lot. thanks to all involved for getting this rad bass into my hands :) if youre on the fence you should really jump on one before the dealers all sell out of em.

Made sense, Arin. Congrats big time!:)

The one thing I had to work a little on when going to the 5 was string-muting. When you pluck a string the whole bass vibrates! It's ALIVE!!!!;)
(Maybe muting isn't much of an issue for since you play with a pick mostly and use your palm as a mute?)

Pics?

im sure ill have more to work on when i hear myself playing it amplified at a decent volume.

but so far im suepr excited and happy :)

I would suggest only playing the 5 for a while, at least until you are comfortable with the B. Switching back and forth at first caused me lots of confusion that I think I could have avoided.

Put an imaginary capo on the 5th fret. Now it's a 4 tuned EADG, just like your 4s.

nice post!

From my experience, it's taken me about a year to feel totally comfortable with the B string. I remember how awkward it was, years ago, just trying to pick up a 5 or 6 string at a music store. It was alien, and completely nerfed my technique and racked my brain.
But now, after a year of playing five strings the majority of my practice seshes, rehearsals, and gigs...it just feel like home. Although, after a couple beers I still have a "5 string brain fart" every now and then.
When that happens, I wind up playing a G instead of the C I was shooting for, so usually it makes the chord sound like it's in 2nd inversion, at which time my piano player shoots me the evil eye!
But I can diffuse the situation by raising my eye brows with a look of surprise and yelling "FIVE STRING!" lol. Then we all crack up.

Funny enough, the new Army Band I just transitioned into has a warwick 6 string and I was messing around on it. All I can say is, HERE WE GO AGAIN!
My next mission is to get the band to fork out some cash for a Bongo...which I will take to Iraq next year!

sry for the (sorta) hijack....

i played it again yesterday and am liking it even more :)

im not too lost with the B around but im definately not using it "well". getting my brain used to the extra possibilities will take time. but thankfully the mechanical part of it isnt a horrible learning curve for me.

im having fun.

people should buy these things :)

as far as the sterling 5 goes. ya, im stoked about that for sure. cant wait to see what it looks like

Great to get your impressions --
...and you're right, it really isn't that big a deal. I've gotten to the point where 4s feel strange now. I miss being able to play a fretted E and when you're playing in D it's so great to have that low D there. The low C and B are a little harder to drop in!

Have fun with it!

I remember when I converted to 5 string........Sep '95 I guess.

The standard tuned songs were no problem, but the d-tuna songs where I set it up for low D on my '87 SR4 took me a while to get used to on the 5 string.

Let's just say the singer wasn't impressed!!!

:)

its 12:09am and im at work and wish i was playing my 20th SR5 instead.

we have a HUGE project at work and the deadline's creaping up... so yesterday i walked into the office and told my staff "everyone go home by 8pm tonight cuz tomorrow you're NOT leaving"

so i dropped the mandatory all nighter bomb on em. we'll be here another 14 hours. they cant leave till at least 7pm :)

anywho... im on hour 16 of cranking out code and have another 14 to go. im kinda tired. LoL. i was informed we just ran out of red bull. things are gonna get ugly soon.

the jist is i wish i were playing my sr5 right now

Congrats Phatduckk,

Your experience of going to 5er is pretty much similar to mine, including the fact that my very first 5er was an SR5.

I had the same feeling, being a bit lost sometimes but not that much. You should get used to the new range pretty soon. Then you can try to use the 5er with offset positions for playing (most playing from the 5th fret on the B string, instead of open E), but of course that is not mandatory, and no doubt you will play it the way you will find it best for you.

Beware though : you *may* be tempted anytime to give up 5ers and switch back to 4. DON'T DO IT.

(but if you do, don't hesitate to PM me for the sale of the 20th :D )

oh no dude. im in this "expand as a bassist phase" and its really revitalizing my playing. thinking outside of my box and all that. its a whole different kind of fun and its been great for me.

the plunge into the 5 world is pretty much part of that. i dont have plans to become a full time 5 string player nor do i see myself quitting on it.

its another tool and im still on page 2 of the manual :)

but, after playing the 5 for a while i played a sterling and oh man... its like i was swiming w/ jeans and finally ditched. my hands were "home" and flying.

im really happy w/ this bass. i havent been this happy with a new bass purchase since i got my hs sterling

I guess I must have missed something.

What meant by "enhanced series" position?

ya, i dunno much either. but i do remember Dargin mentioning something about it in the thread where he first posted the 20th pics. i think (im guessing) position 2 is "enhanced series" and w/ my very limited experience so far i think the single coil position (pos 2 on standard sr5 SINGLE H) is not on the 20th Sr5 SINGLE H.

All the best for your coding from this side of the world! I hope you're already finished!
