Hi Folks,

This is my first post, so hello everyone. :)

A friend just picked up a brand new Silhouette Deluxe. He was gracious enough to let me play it for a bit, and boy...

The fit of the neck, and the action were absolutely perfect. Low tension, very fast action - a dream to play.

However, the neck is just too narrow for me. :(

I looked around, and it seems that Music Man guitars are not available with wider necks. My 1984 Strat Elite is my ideal. It looks like this (minus the Floyd Rose):

Flying Pig Music - Fender Stratocaster Elite

Can anyone tell me if I've missed something?

Thanks,
Dan

Hello

Welcome on board ...

Concerning the neck width, I do not own a 1984 Strat so I cannot say. But Steve Morse was playing a Frankenstein guitar (a Tele body + a Strat neck, I believe a Strat neck from the seventies) and after that he designed his Steve Morse Signature. So perhaps you have to try a Steve Morse Sig ... It's a perfect guitar !

I think comparing with the fenders, if you want a wider neck, then a JP6 or a Luke would fit you well. I've never tried an AL, but that might work too. the Axis and Silos will be too narrow for you.

The morse might be what you really want, except there's no forearm cutaway. If you like playing with Teles, then this can fit you nciely... (and the neck profile is really nice too!)

However, I've grown so used to the silo width, I kinda think it suits the thickness. Any wider, and I think I'll find it too hard to play, almost like a baseball bat. It's just right now.

Dan,

If I'm not mistaken those 1984 Fender Elite Strats (and the 2-knob "Standard Strats") had necks that were 1.700" wide at the nut (they were also about the thinnest in depth of any necks that Fender used); a Silo Special has a 1.625" nut-width neck, so there is a bit of a difference. The only current EBMM that has a wider neck is the Petrucci which is 1.6875" wide at the nut.

They are very rare, but I believe that the earliest Silhouette's were available with wider necks circa 1986-1988 (or maybe 1989).

Maybe if you play a Silo for a while, you might get used to it. Maybe you could borrow your friends guitar over a weekend or something to see if it might work out for you?

Yeah,

I agree, check out the Luke and JP models, the necks are awesome and I think you'll like the widths!

Actually the Luke neck is the same width as the Silo/Silo Special/AL/Morse/Madden/Axis (all variations). However, most that I have tried have that fairly "deep" V shape and feel bigger than a Silo/Silo Special. Also the 12" radius on the Luke (and the Morse) contributes to that "bigger" feel.

Yeah John,

I was thinkin' what you mentioned, the "radius" being flatter on the Luke, not the nut and/or neck base being wider!:)

i thought from the website that the Silo has the widest neck of all??????????

It depends on which measurement. All EBMM guitars have a 1 5/8" wide neck at the nut (or 1.625" or 41.3mm) except for the JP6, which is 1 11/16" wide at the nut (or 1.6875" or 43mm).

Now most EBMM necks are 2 1/4" wide at the end of the neck; the exceptions being the Luke, Axis and Axis SuperSport which are 2 3/16" wide at the end of the neck - so the Silo neck would be tied with most of the other models as widest ant the end of the neck.

Of course, the JP7 neck is the widest of them all at both points, but we're only discussing 6-strings here.
