Five years ago this month, after a LONG wait and unending crap (good-natured, mostly) from Gard back in his days at Bass Central, I received my very first Bongo.
I'd called Gard after NAMM and said, "Get me one." He said, "What color do you want?" I said, "I don't care. The first one you get, it's mine." I think the only thing I specified was that it be an HH, which was a useless thing to specify at the time; that's all there was!
And the wait was unending, it seemed at the time. I'd seen the photos from NAMM in January of 2003. We didn't even know when the first ones would ship. As it turned out, Gard called me in November. (Yes, I called him a few times before then. Beaver, I hope you miss that guy.)
When I came home from work and found that box waiting for me....I don't think I've ever been quite so excited about a bass. Really.
It was about ten minutes old (well, at least at Camp Bovine) in that photo. I hadn't even plugged it in yet. And I didn't yet know how CONTROVERSIAL the damned design was going to be, either. Heh.
I took it everywhere, I played it constantly. It was - and still is - just about the coolest thing that ever happened to me. That bass and the excitement (good and bad) around it was what caused me to become, whatever it really means, "Lord Bongo".
If you were here or on TB or the Dudepit at the time, you might recall what a crusader I was. And still am, really. I still am. I still think it's the best damned bass ever built. I've been through a lot of Bongos along the way, but this one has been a constant and always will be.
In a way, that bass also led to my friendship with BP and the Ball family, which includes so many of the people whose last name isn't "Ball" but who are family nonetheless. Beth, Jon, the other Jon, Aziah, Dudley, Drew, Kevin, Luke.....and more than a few of you Knuckleheads.
Hey, Sterling? Thanks for that bass. It's a good one.
