Hi Guys,

I'm using a Sterling Ray 4 S.U.B. series.

The secret of flea's sound is not a big SECRET is basicly tree things...

Lizznup. Zgotta be EITHER "tree tings" OR "three things".

P.S. "3" could be spoken either way, but must match the
version of "tings/things" which follows. Mixing dialects is
verboten, portickyoolurlee in zombieland.

Oh yea ... welcome to MM land :)

Oh, and hooz "Flea" ? Thaz gotta be the REAL secret ....

And btw, Flea must have gotten a brain transplant lately, because I've seen him in some recent interviews and his brain doesn't seem fried at all.

Or maybe it's just me. I think I may need the number to his doctor's.

My 92 stingray pretty much nails the tone with all knobs boosted.

IOW, you know what this Flea sounds like in his ensemble, in a
large audience venue via first-hand listening and/or via recorded
performances, and you have likewise listened to your '92 SR as
it is played in a similar ensemble and venue ... meaning you let
someone else play it or you used wireless to venture out into the
house whilst performing in said ensemble, and/or you have been
similarly recorded whilst playing in said ensemble. Either way, I
must applaud your diligence in nailing your sought-after sound !

Otherwise ... toadall foolishness has ensued, starting with diming
your entire EQ, and thence rolling downhill from there. I'm pretty
sure that I do NOT sound like the players that I admire, just as
those players ought to be pretty sure that they do not sound like
each other. Likewise I have little or no idea what I sound like, or
WOULD sound like in ensembles I've never played in. But I do
know, via wireless, how me and my Boingo HH sound in just one
particular hall with one particular ensemble. After that, the POS
Nady wireless shat the bed, plus Ms Diva declared that she does
not like having the bass DI'ed into the PA :-/

I should correct myself in saying "At least where my amp is set, my 92 stingray pretty much nails the tone with all knobs boosted when I or someone else plays it...The tone at least, not necessarily the playing"


For all other "non flea" type tones my personal settings are usually bass rolled up slightly and treble and mid set flat or rolled back a bit. (Just in case you wanna sound like me);)

You bring up an important element there:
"At least where my amp is set, ..... "

It's a good idea to know where the EQ band centers are on both
your ax AND your amp. Sometimes they're pretty much on top of
each other, sometimes they fill in each other's gaps, and acoarst
sometimes it's just chaotic.

If the amp centers and ax centers are pretty much on top of each
other, then using a 3-band SR you can create two huge scoops in
your EQ, or one huge scoop with a 2-band. And you can imagine
the scenarios if the amp and ax fill in each other's gaps. Acoarst
chaos is always a possibility .......

Anywho it's worthwhile to find out how the EQ shapes of your ax
and your amp relate to each other. Lacking such info, there is a
safe and sane approach, as numerous posts here over the years
have described. The ax EQ is pretty much nulled, while the amp's
EQ controls the bassic sound for the room. Then some very slight
tweaks can be applied via the ax's EQ, as needed and if needed.
