Hello,

After many years, I've gotten back into playing guitar. I've always lusted after the EVH / Axis hardtail and am giving serious consideration to buying one. I just have a few questions.

1). What is the difference in appearance between a quilted and flamed top?

2). What is the rough price difference between an Axis HH Standard and an Axis HH Standard w/Piezo (e.g. 20% more)?

3). Other than having the threaded hole for a tremelo, are the bridges used in the Axis SS Standard and Axis SS Tremelo the same? Or does the Axis SS Tremelo have a different bridge setup with space to travel up/down for the movement of the tremelo? I know this seems like a dumb question, but I've only owned hollow body guitars and have never used a tremelo.

I think that's about it for now. BTW - I think this site is great. Seeing a manufacturer sponsor and participate in this type of forum is fantastic.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum

As a quick response

1) Flamed tops have a tiger stripe pattern (in the furniture world they call it tiger maple). Quilt tops have a pillowy cloud look similar to .....a quilt. Check the Official BFR photo sticky thread to see various examples of flames, quilts and those that fall almost in between.

2) I haven't priced a piezo vs. non piezo recently but I believe the retail price for the piezo is around $400 (someone can correct me if this is off now). Actual street price would between you and your dealer.

3) The bridge set ups are somewhat similar looking at first glance, but not the same. A standard bridge is mounted directly to the top of the guitar where a trem bridge is connected to a trem block and then springs on the underside of the body to allow for depression and return via the trem bar. Axis SS trem bridges are set up flush with the body to allow dive only trem usage, returning the bridge to level when released.

Most EBMM trems are set to dive only. I think the JP is the exception to that. With the others, a spring adjustment is usually enough to allow the trem to float.

The Super Sport comes in either hardtail or trem. Piezo is an option.

Welcome MB,

Now that you have all your questions answered, what one are you gettin"?? And, don't forget, you have to post pic's!

Oh yeah, and it's pretty cool having the manufacturer participate in this type of a forum. And, he's usually in a pretty good mood, but let me give you fair warning: DON'T WAKE HIM UP FROM HIS NAP AND DON"T PM HIM!!

LOL:)

Thanks all! This is great info.

TNT: I think I'm inclined to get an Axis SS HH Standard with a quilt top. In terms of color, I really like the Black Cherry Burst, Pacific Blue Burst, and Honey Burst. It's hard to choose.

I guess I need to see what all of my local dealers have in stock and, if they don't have what I want, how long it will take to special order my ideal color.

Hey there and welcome to the forum! I recently became an axis addict...I'm asolutely loving them! As far as ordering one, they are taking approx. 3-4 months to deliver, but that's only an estimate. Where are you located? Hopefully there's a dealer near by to check some out...If not, we're all here to help in your search.

Best of luck to you!

EBMM used to do a premium upgrade option, where you could request what kind of top you got.

Now, it's a luck of the draw approach. You might get quilt, and you might get flame. Just want you to be aware when/if you order a new one.

That's great info on delivery. I'm in Virginia and have had a hard time finding a local dealer that has an Axis Super Sport HH in stock -- at least in a color that I like. I found some authorized dealers on the internet who have colors that are like my 3rd or 4th choices.

There are several US dealers that post regularly on this site. Pete DuBaldo and JeffreyB, just to name a couple.

I used to live in VA as well. Other than GC, I couldn't find very many dealers there either, much less any store that had any in stock. Thank God for the internet, 'cause I found quite a few here.
