I agree wit ya Azzy, it is a community.

This place is like a big backstage area on one of those huge, multi act, weekend music fest. Where musicians from different bands hang out and talk about, well …everything!

This is a community but not like any I’ve ever seen. Back when I went thru my “digital recording studio” phase (a very expensive period in my life that now seems like a fuzzy memory … of having two surgical steel needles stuck thru my eyeballs in to my brain!), I had to join a couple of DAW software forums. I needed help and info, but both were to attain due to constant… well, crap! Some of those places turned my stomach so bad I stopped going anywhere for quite a while.

Then, long story short, I bought a MusicMan, came here to register it and somehow wound up here and I’ve been here ever since. This is a friendly place, I remember when I was a newbie and not really a bass player, the welcome you folks gave me. From BP on down everyone here is fun to hang out with. It’s kind of funny when a troll does come along, it’s so rare here, and it really stands out.

I figure we all have several things in common, musicians, EBMM fans, cross dressing tap dancing hoola strippers (ok maybe not all of us are musicians, but you get my drift…)

Thanks again BP, you got a great place here!

Marketing Tool/living Room Forum that's Ok

I read the entire "free speech" thread, couldn't find the thread that started it. I visit the Eden forum and I believe it is operated by Eden. Regularly there is someone who had a bad experience and flat out bashes the heck out of the company. The majority of responses tend to show concern with the issue but generally defend Eden. It's interesting that Eden let's these play their course and does their best to resolve the issue or express the company perspective. At this point Eden takes a hands off approach in moderating threads. I respect that. The Tascam forum is not run by Tascam but in the forum rules it is stated constructive criticism is Ok but bashing will not be tolerated. Fair enough. Neither of these two forums are strictly love fests for the companies. The posters are free to express displeasure, point out perceived shortcomings of the product, question decisions being made and suggest or request changes that they feel are needed or will improve the company or product. Some may be valid others may not. I see that as useful info for a company to gather.
If a forum is created mostly as a tool or means to increase sales and keep the "buzz" going I think it lessens it's value. So if someone tells you they are not thrilled with your lastest design or creation you can tell them to "get the h*ll out of my living room" or you can say Musicman is thrilled with the new line, it offers exciting , cutting edge features and design. We know it's quite different and it may take time for some to see the beauty we see in it and yes it's possible you may always remain more comfortable with the "traditional" basses. We love those also, the Sterling and Stingray will remain our foundation. Either way we believe in MusicMan and will continue to develop first class basses for the world...................or yeah you can just say "don't come in my living room and pee on my carpet "

PS I love my Stingray and I admire and respect MusicMan and wish them the best,

Nice rant. You should have found the thread that started it and then decided if you wanted to get involved. The ability to criticize goes both ways.

Everything you said has been said. By us.YOu dont think that we took the relentless Bongo bashing? You dont think that I constantly say if the new stuff isnt foryou we will continue to make the old stuff?

It is really funny that pitters are coming over here and getting involved when its been put to bed. (P.S. We dont do a lot of banning then unbanning...posting and then deleting.) That is not a dig on the Pit...Im registered there but even your favorite forums get crazy sometimes. WE keep it all up front. Also you quote the Eden forum...they are considerably smaller with much fewer members and postings...it was easier a few years ago when our forum was smaller.

I wonder if the other companies/forums mentioned have done similar things like the open house and Dallas bash? I wouldn't walk into the office of these companies and say some of the things I've seen written here. I just wonder why people would say it online?

I knew ahead of time that a 'free speech' thread would be an open invitation to criticism. If I couldn't handle the heat, I wouldn't have turned on the stove.

I still have the ability to turn off the stove, of course, but this has been an interesting exercise. I'm sure we've all learned things.

One thing that many of you don't know, I suspect, is how often I used to kill threads and how many times BP told me, "Don't do that." If he wants to explain why, I'll leave it to him. My take is that he wants to see both sides of any given question. Or all sides, maybe.

Not for me to say.

Dave, I have nothing but respect for David and what he's done with Eden. I've also read the Eden Forum and seen what you're talking about, but - in my opinion - the customer service issues have been allowed to run amok. People with no room to talk have done some serious damage to Eden. If David wants to let that go on, that's his choice. Eden has gone out of their way to fix certain problems and have been slagged for it. One person with a keyboard can make an impact that is completely out of whack with reality. I've seen it and so have you.

I don't know what Eden does with Customer Service issues. I DO know what EBMM does. I know how far the company has gone - even, sometimes, on instruments that are way out of warranty - and I know how often BP has gone way beyond what anyone should reasonably expect.

If the way this forum is managed doesn't seem reasonable to you, then I don't know what else to tell you. I really don't. Most of the emails I get are supportive, and that makes me think we're doing okay. It's not a popularity contest - the EBMM forum versus Talkbass or the Dudepit or whatever - every forum has its own appeal and that's certainly okay with me, considering that I'm a contributor to most of the online bass forums - but this, to me, is one of the friendliest forums available.

I'm doing the best I can. The other moderators are, I'm sure, doing exactly the same. Amongst the many online forums, this one offers you a unique opportunity to interact with the guy who runs the company, the guys who design and engineer and build and fix the instruments.

I think that's pretty goddamned cool. I never lose sight of that.

Sometimes, though, people do.

That's when my job as moderator gets crappy.

I can deal with that, too.

But let's not lose sight of what an opportunity this is. Let's not lose sight of how unique this is. Let's not lose sight of what a family this is.
