Hey guys, I just picked up a '97 SR4...blank plank...I'm getting a buzz on the D&G strings from the E&A notes 1st position...the nut was cut way low, the strings were actually cutting into the wood behind the nut, i shimmed the nut up, adjusted the truss (almost straight) saddles nice and low, plays great all over...any suggestions on getting rid of the buzz ??? I thought raising the nut would do it ... i've already ordered a new nut from CS ... but was hoping i had found a quick fix for the time being ... oh and theres no groove in the fingerboard around those notes the wood is nice and smooth ...

You don't have buzz on open strings, and yet you decide raising the nut it s good idea? Honestly, and don't take this the wrong way, but you need to take it to someone who knows how to do a set up.

I never said no buzz on open strings, but i'm still getting a real bad buzz on the area i mentioned...i want a little buzz, and i know how to do a setup ... putting relief in the neck does not help, and also as stated the guy before me, filed the nut to try to get lower action instead of a truss adjustment,,,

Ok, but listen, if you don't tell the whole story it's very hard to say anything useful. If you can't fix it with a set up (which you say you know how to do so I won't say anything more on that) you need the plank levelled. The only temporary remedy would of course be to raise the strings some more, but that you already knew.

Btw, the grooves behind the nut are normal for those basses.

i do appreciate all the advice, i was just hoping that someone knew something more i could try before the leveling (i guess i was hoping i was overlooking something) ... I live in East Ky the hills of appalachia and truthfully theres no one around that can work on the bass ... so my options where try to find out if i missed anything or ship it somewhere to be leveled ... the part that gets me is the board is smooth no real markings and no grooves, and i have the action on it higher than on my fretted ray.

When the neck needs some bow to it there is no way raising strings will fix it.

Same way when it is on the other end of the neck too.

Setup isn't that hard.

I am a hillbilly myself and make my stuff play without taking it some where other than a gig.

There are times a string could be the issue too.

Give the trussrod another 1/4 turn to the left, with the body on your lap and
the neck away from you.Or shim the top of the neck pocket.
