Just purchased a '95 fretless Sterling with the intentions of modifying it. Came with a Bart pup and pre, which sounded fairly decent. I disassembled the entire instrument to give it a thorough cleaning, and was just impressed by the build quality of this instrument. Machined screws for the pup, w/ o-rings holding the springs to the underside of the pup; the body was even recessed for the o-rings, Stainless screws, stout hardware and a sturdy Pau Fero f-board. With this bass I rcvd 3 extra pickups, so now's the time to experiment......I settled on using the stock pre and pup. I sounds great with my 12 yr old TI flats! And although I favor all of my settings in "series", the tonal variations I'm getting with it in "parallel" are quite intriguing to me. What I really wanted was a fretless SR4....but this one might just do it for me.
