sound clips anyone? all this talk about flats has made me very interested...

i know aussie mark has a few clips of his stingray strung with chromes in the band mix - but does anyone have SOLOED clips of their fretted stingray with flats? so just their bass?

flats cost a heap here...and being a poor uni student doesn't help either...

True, but Chromes are half the price at juststrings.com, or the Dude sells TIs and Rotosound at grat prices at his ebay store. Postage is expensive if you're only buying one set, but if you know some gitards or other bassists to pool with you and share postage, buying several sets of strings (can be different types) at a time is the way to go.

I just took some flats off of my fretted SR4 a couple of days ago & replaced 'em with roundwounds. If I hadn't done that, I would have been happy to try to create a sound clip & upload it for you.

Hey PJ - I'll p.m. Bo, and ask him if he'd send you my set from the Flatwound thread giveaway. I don't particularly need to be sold on flats; I use them anyway on my Sabre.

Oh sure, get my @ss further in hock with international postage!

Actually, okay, I don't mind.

I love you guys.

My benchmark for a Stingray with flats tone is "Another One Bites the Dust". If that ain't a Stingray with flats, I'll eat the first Queen album.

Then my best advice to you would be to not string your Stingray with flats.

STOP. DO NOT PASS GO. And so on.

Tone is terminally subjective. People think I'm nuts for stringing a Bongo with flats, but you know, I like it. Flea fanatics think it odd that I put flats on a Stingray. Well, good for them! I'd rather listen to, say, Ben Folds than RHCP anyway.

Each one of us has this concept of "perfect bass tone" in our heads, and we scuttle about as best we can, trying to reproduce that sound.

Whatever you use to get that sound is okay by me. But keep in mind that not everyone wants the same thing.

i may be poor, but not THAT poor...

great idea tho with the Queen song - never knew it was a 'ray, i'll be sure to give it a good listen...

just wanted to hear some of you guys playing with those flats on...in a solo setting :D

Don't worry about a thing. I'd be glad to send you a set of flats since whatshisname has given up his special status.

PM me your address. I'm off tomorrow to snag some envelopes and mail flats to England, Scotland, Iceland, you name it - Australia doesn't scare me one bit.

It should. We got sharks, crocodiles, and the world's most venomous snakes and spiders. Not to mention women who wear plaid flannel shirts, track pants and sheepskin boots, who are built like linebackers.

That track inspired me to start playing bass when I was 15 years old. Wish I'd known it was a Stingray, I wouldn't have wasted the last 20 years playing other brands of basses. I can't believe I never tried a Stingray in all that time. Sheesh!

Y'know, it's funny, but I think I know what you mean.

When I was first deciding, I never really gave MM a second glance. Every other bass company was basically in my face from all angles and they all looked fancy and what not and me being a naive early bassbaby I didn't really even think about MM.

Then I found out it was thousands of dollars cheaper and much easier to get a hold of than some other basses that could be mentioned.

So I tried an OLP, was blown away, and it wasn't long untill I bought a SUB. Sure Now I know all about the glory, now that I'm already a fan, but as far as I see there doesn't seem to be a lot of hype about MM, I mean, not advertised at least. As soon as you talk to somebody that plays one though....

I kinda like that. In a time when everything is spammed to death it's nice to see a great product that's just plain great because it's great, and not because it's got the most colours or advertisement methods or what not behind it.

...sorry, I rambled.
