I've found a place here in Irving where I live that has a blues jam on Sunday evenings. It starts at about 7:30 and is over by 10:30 so it's not a late night at all. I've been there for the last 3 Sunday's and it's a lot of fun to get up and just play whatever with whoever is up there on stage.

Anyway, last night while I was on stage, a few songs in the emcee brings this guy up to sing. We kick off "Roadhouse Blues" and this guy is tearing up the vocals! Then we get into "Redhouse" and he's at it again. The next thing you know, he's on the drums playing and singing "Born on the Bayou" (Which, unfortunatly I was the only other person on stage that knew the song.). (EBMM content to come.)

When we fininshed the last song, the emcee came back up and announced that this guy is the lead singer in a Queen tribute band called "Queed for a Day" and he wanted him to finish off the evening solo. He sat down at the keyboard and played and sand "Somebody" and just nailed it!

Today, I went to their website, www.queenforaday.us. Lo and behold, their bass player is playing a Sterling.

Sounds like a great night at the local jam.

I go to two local blues jams almose every week. Some nights are great, some... not so great, but they are always fun. Plus I can walk home from both of them... if I had too. ;)

Most of the local jams here are on weekday, or Sundays, and they go kinda late. Makes me feel like an old fogey, but I gotta go to work in the morning.

I too attend 2 open jams a week. I know the house band (sometimes I'm part of the house band when the regular bass player has another gig), and I know all of the songs they do and then some. I always get praises for the sound of my Sterlings
& the Bongo (depending on which one I decide to bring). At times there are a few vocal whores who can really tear it up.....on the other hand there are a few that would give you baby bird syndrome.....like nails on a chalkboard. It is a good way to meet local musicians & see who's good & who's all talk. I love the guys who have high dollar equipment & can't play a lick to save their ass.

I had only been to a couple of blues jams before this one and that was a really long time ago. And then I didn't participate. I just sat back and listened. The people that run this one are great. They really encourage you to sign the list and get up and play. All three times I've been there were some pretty good players there.

Most of them are the same way here. They start anywhere from 9:30 - 11:00 on weeknights and I can't stay up that late and go to work the next day. I've been told that some of the players at this jam will leave by 9:00 or 10:00 and head to another jam. I go home. I have to get up at 6 a.m. to go to work.

I need to find something like that here I would love to develop some blues skills. I would even stay up late on a week night and get little to no sleep to have that kind of fun.

Barkatozz, exactly the same thing here, I know all the house band guys and girls, plus they host both jams. I live so close by the leader (Sheila) often asks me to go get my keys or a bass when ever they have a shortage. I've loaned them my Ashdown bass rig a few times. I try to support the jams to keep them going. I mostly go for the fellowship.

But the first time I played bass with a band was at those jams... of course I waited till my dear friend Eric Smith was on drums, we've played together for years in various bands, I knew he would be kind. And he was, he told me I didn't suck too bad.

Larry, where was that at? I have no interest in playing, but I wouldn't mind listening. And by the way, I will stalk your posts until we get pics...

Hey Paul, it's in old downtown Irving at 132 W. Irving Blvd.. The website is www.thepigeonholeirving.com. Let me know if you are going and I'll meet you there. That is unless you're going next Sunday. I'll be on my way back from SLO.
