Hi folks,

this week a bought a 1977 StingRay II guitar and now I´m not sure of the functions of the flip switch. There seems to be no difference in the sound when I use it and now I don´t know what it´s meant for. Switching from active to passive mode? Or is there a problem with the electronics?
Thank You for any help!

Hi. Awesome looking guitar. The information i have is that the 4 way selector switch provides for either Bridge, Neck, Both Pickups and Out-Of-Phase positions. The Out-Of-Phase will effect both pickups at the same time, so unfortunately you cannot apply this to individual pickups. I'm sure your aware that the built-in Pre-Amp provides for the Low-Impedance output pickups, as well as for the separate Treble and Bass controls.

Please check that the 9V battery is ok for the Pre-Amp to function. A low battery may be the reason for the lack of sound distinction between pickups. Also it might be possible that the out-of phase switch could be 'on' all the time (possibly modded by previous owner -just guessing here). Normally when the battery is flat the guitar doesn't output any sound. The guitar provides Active output only and not Passive.

I hope this helps.

Regards

Thank You Saiyuki! But there still seems to be a problem with the electronics. The PU-selector seems to work, but there is absolutely no affect on the sound when I use the flip switch. I know this out-of-phase from a Sabre-bass I own and it changes the sound only a bit, but on my guitar there is absolutley no difference.
Beside that there is still output even if I take out the battery! Strange.

Hi. Sorry my bad on the no battery no sound output. I just tried my sabre 2, and it does still output sound but at an equivilant number 1 on the volume scale.

I'll get my missus to scan the information i have for the Stingrays and i'll attach them in my next post.

Whilst waiting for the missus i found a Stingray Wiring Diagram, which will probably be more useful for the sound problem. Sorry that it's a small image.

WOW! Thank You very much! Now I know that it´s a bright-switch ;-) I opened the control-panel and wiring in my guitar seems to be very different from the diagram You posted. Maybe it´s a different type of pre-amp I have - or a past owner really messed it up.

Hmm. A different looking wiring? Perhaps the original was swapped out for a later type. I've attached the Sabre wiring diagram for comparison.

The pre-amp itself seems to be original - it´s a black epoxy circuit board that isn´t modified. The cables that come from this board have partially different colors. Strange. But thank You for Your help.

Compared to the Silo I have the StingRay II has absolutely low output. Took on and off the battery and nothing changes. Seems like the pre-amp simply doesn´t work. ****.
