whenever I use the trem on my petrucci, the G string (no jokes... :) )goes sharp in proportion to how deep I work the bar.

any ideas on what's causing this?

How long have you been waiting to say that. I have given that phrase mirror time.

Again I suggest Remington Teflon Spray. (Available at the largest retailer in the nation in the sporting goods department) It's still slicker than greased owl $h!t that's been boiled with okra! :p

I have missed opporunities in the past to thank you for contributing the Tennessee vernacular. So, hey... thanks for that, NorM!

I am having a similar problem, but with all three treble strings and a slight amount with the low E (I go a few cents sharp on the G, and a little less on the B and high-E). Now I have worked on a trem or two over the years ;) , and I have pretty much burnished, lubed and worked my nut slots to shiny smooth perfection, but it still does not return to pitch even with very slight dips with the bar. (And, yes, I pre-stretch my strings ;) ).

So, that got me to thinking about the saddles, and sure enough I noticed some binding there with a maginfying glass, and also some burring starting to happen... especially on the G string. So I sanded them lightly with some 2000 grit sand paper and tuning stability immediately got better, but still not perfect (I'm convinced that the G is still binding a tad on the saddle, despite the sanding). This could be the cause of the tuning instability for some people here who have tried everything to lube and burnish the nut but still go a little bit out of tune.

I have some Graphtech saddles on order that should fit the Pet perfectly. Once I get them on and test 'em out I'll report back here with results and pics. If you can stand the black color on the bridge instead of chrome, this might be the answer for those who have tried everything else but still can't stay in tune. I have never really cared what a guitar looks like, just as long as it works like it should. :)

This may sound silly, but I've had great result tightening up the screws in the tuning machines. Most recently the G in my Luke just wouldn't stay at pitch. Tighened up the tuner, presto, issue resolved.

Actually, that's not silly at all. It's one of the many things that should be checked periodically on any guitar, trem or no trem.

Here is another way to do the Graphtech saddles on a JP6 that is better cosmetically and tonally.

Cool idea! If I really hate the Graph-Tech look (I doubt I'll care) I might just do this instead. It is much cheaper. :D

There are new Graph tech saddles called Ferra Glide. Have them on my desk while I ´m writing. They are metal with graphite inserts. They look great

My mod is a way to imitate the ferra-glide idea using the stock Petrucci saddles.

thanks to all who have posted on this topic. this has been extremly helpful. but good god am I having a hard time finding graphite or tephlon lubricant over here. pleas for "graphite-u" or "teflon-u" are simply not working and I don't have the first idea where to buy those kinds of hardware supplies over here - I only ever have to walk 4 blocks to the 7-11 (they're everywhere!) for nearly all my groceries and stuff... unfortunatly they don't carry industrial lubricant supplies. this will be some sort of misguided adventure that I'm sure will result in my getting lost in f%#king sumo town again with hordes of schoolboys following me ominously back to the subway station. (that time I was looking for zippo fluid and ended up with a bottle maker's mark black label sour mash instead. not too bad.)

You can get graphite by making pencil lead shavings. then you can use it straight or mix it with vaseline or chapstick to create a graphite gel that will stick better. Also you could get a small file and slightly enlarge the nut slot that is binding.
