I'm looking for a new guitar to cover my Strat need, and I'm thinking of checking out the G&L Legacy. What do you EBMM bums have to say about G&L? How do the Legacy (and their other models for the matter) measure up to, say, the Silhouette Special?

Ok, forget about the comparison. What do you ppl have to say about G&L in general? Can I get a better Strat for the same money?

Silhouette all the way man!

Even if I was in a Pink Floyd tribute band I'd still use a silhouette!
Although it would be pimped out to look like Gilmours black one but still a silhouette.
Its just the best strat type ever, without all the drawbacks :)

I like G&L's and have owned several, including a lightweight Legacy hardtail and an S500. I don't especially care for any of their MFD pickups, though; too glassy and overpowering for my taste. The Legacy body always felt kinda oversized (I'm not a big guy), and their bridge/trem, quite frankly, felt like boat achors.

I sold my last G&L (S500) three years ago, and then had my last go-round with a frankenstrat. A little over two years ago I got my first Silhouette Special. About a year later, another one. HSS and SSS. I'm a happy guy.

Here's the Silo Special features that suit me better (than G&L):

compact and balanced neck and body
superb bridge and trem
10" radius neck
oil finished neck
5 bolt neck
contoured heel
personally preferred sc p'ups compared to Legacy

My experience has been positive with both companies. I prefer MusicMan.

Oh, I also greatly prefer the one volume, one tone setup, as I always had to remove the volume knob on the 3 knob setups.

Tell me, what are the drawbacks?

The Silhouette Special is the only guitar I've used that you're interested in. It's a jack of all trades. A single coil loaded pickguard will get you where you want to be.

Alternately, you could get an AL pickguard loaded with single coils.

I have a G&L Legacy and I think it sounds awesome. The build quality is top notch but the neck is chunkier with a tinted maple gloss.

I also have an AL sss which is the bees knees for me. It's a different stratty sound than the G&L but it's all good. I let my brother borrow the G&L indefinately. I wouldn't do that w/ my AL.

The other posts reminded me of points I missed. I do agree it is heavier and bigger-bodied physically. I don't have locking tuners on mine and whenever I use the tremolo I'd have tuning issues.----could be all my fault, but I thought of getting locking tuners later on down the road. The glassy and overpowering pickups I liked, but that's up to the individual. The one asthetic thing that bugs me is the weird looking headstock. It's too long and that little point looks odd and out of place.

I played a 'G&L' in a musicstore recently when trying out the new marshall JVM amplifier.they gave me the most expensive guitar in the store to play with the new amp.i cudnt get over the difference in the setup of my BFR JP6 compared to the G&L guitar.

no comparison.

EBMM all the way!

reflexive chuckle on this.. it's just one of those mysteries.

I'm not saying I'd never own another G&L, nor any other guitar that grabs me. Sometimes I do miss a 12" radius, but rather thinking Legacy, I start thinking Morse.

I'd say Silhouette Special all the way.
I am glad to own three of them in quite different configs concerning PUs, fretboards, trems, non-trems, ...
I have access to some older as well as newer Strats at my rehearsal space and though I cannot comment on any G&L, the Silos are far lighter than the average Strat, much easier to handle, the necks are unparalleled in playability, and these guitars have become my ultimate weapon for practically all tasks from blues to funk to rock to metal - you name it.

Give the Silhouette Special a good try if you have the chance - I doubt you will want to let go of it.

Cheers

Well, what did you expect from an EBMM forum? I'm not a one brand man myself and have owned both guitars. Both excellent instruments, very well made.

The G&L has a more traditional strat tone, more liquidity in the pickups, but the Silhouette is just a little raunchier. Essentially though the G&L is a Strat copy, whereas I think the Silhouette is a refinement. The G&L is larger & heavier and has to be longer since the headstock has to have that silly blip to avoid infringing Fender's trademark. The EBMM is more compact and comfortable with a headstock designed to suit it.
If you want a strat, then Fender make a nice one for much less than either of the others,.........but to sum up, I've owned Fenders & G&Ls....but I still have the EBMM

G&L is probably my second favorite after EBMM. I have owned many G&Ls (Legacy & S-500 versions), but now only have a Silo Special.

The necks share a common 1 5/8" nut width (G&L #1 neck) - which attracted me in the first place. However, I have found G&L neck profiles are all over the place. I've had thinner and thicker versions of the same neck in back. The weights are also inconsistent - you can get a lightweight or a tank. So, I won't buy another without trying it out first. They supposedly have new CNC, Plekked necks these days, so maybe these issues have been resolved.

I'd say go Legacy over virtually any other strat-style guitar, except the Silo (haven't tried the AL). Silo takes the cake unless you really need a strat that's not a "Strat."
