Got back from G3 in Nashville yesterday (the show was on Tues. night). It was simply awe inspiring to say the least. I had never gotten to see any of these guys play live before so it was an all around treat for me, especially.

I am a huge Petrucci fan, so let me get that out of the way first. However, I've not been a real big fan of DT and rarely listen to their music. I have tons of Petrucci stuff, though... his instructional books (Rock Discipline, Wild Stringdom) and the Rock Discipline DVD, as well as an original Ibanez JPM-P1 which is easily one of my most collectible and favorite guitars.

So, knowing how great John is I am still thinking that his set is going to be slightly on the boring side because I felt that Paul and Satch were going to be more entertaining and their music easier to follow in a live context. Boy was I wrong. John's set was one of the most inspirational and amazing musical performances I have ever seen. His tone, his note choices and the songs he played were simply stunning. My wife was standing there dumbfounded and hasn't stopped talking about it since. I was already a fan before seeing John, but now I am REALLY a fan of John Petrucci. Holy crap!

Here are a few pics from a guy I know who I found at the concert (he's also from Memphis). Didn't even know he was there until after. He was sitting stage left, front row... so he got great pics of John.

-------------------

Paul pulled out the drill, so John pulled out the chicken! :D He still played amazing well with it, but tossed it pretty quickly... it was really funny, though, they way they set it up. :)

This was after a ridiculous run that probably melted his pick. :)

This was after the chicken incident. Paul was answering a blazing run from John in a little trade off back and forth. John was easily the fastest. Not sure Paul was even seriously trying to one up him.

I was an awesome show. Afterwards I got meet Gilbert, but John and Satch ducked out early. I buddied up to the runner for John's bus and he told me that John and Portnoy's families were en-route to meet them in Nashville to hang out for some of the next few dates. So John was preoccupied with personal matters and didn't really have that much time. He did pop out to sign a few autographs, but we were over at Gilbert's bus when he did that.

I got to meet Mark Tremonti, who saw the whole show and is in Nashville recording the next Alter Bridge album. Got to talk to him for a little while and he was really a super nice guy. Toshi Iseda was there with him, but he wasn't quite as approachable.

All in all it was a very cool experience! All three guys played an incredible show!!

That is so cool right there. I've seen the G3 here in San Francisco last March 17th it was a great show. You are very lucky to have seen the show and met Mark Tremonti. icing on the cake it is!

It must be nice to be that comfortable on guitar that you can play with a rubber chicken infront of a paying audience. Blast you, Trooch.

Mark Tremonti is the man. It would be cool if he became an EB player.

I have no problem with him sticking with PRS though :)

I'm in TN this week and I wanted to go to the show but I had to work. This is a business trip after all. I'm glad you got to go and thanks for the review.
Maybe G3 is coming to AZ.

thanks for the review, why does PG wear the earmuffs/headphones?

I'm pretty sure its ear protection. But, instead of wearing earplugs like most normal humans, he has to be Paul Gilbert and wear those huge things on his head. :)

He was such a nice guy and very patient with everybody crowding around him. The coolest thing about the show was seeing all the dads and their kids with them getting that exposure to awesome guitar playing. The G3 concerts are important, in my opinion, to keeping technical guitar playing alive. No telling how many 15 year olds will be inspired to really learn to play after each G3 tour.

It was a very cool experience for me at 34... I can only imagine how awestruck a kid must have been seeing those guys play like that.

It looks like hes starting to resemble Russell Allen of Symphony X.

lol!!! I never put that together before! But yeah, the hair style and even the facial hair is making my favorite guitarist look like one of my absolute favorite singers!!

BTW, my band, Odin's Court is opening for Symphony X @ Jaxx in Springfield, VA on Wednesday, August 8! It is going to be an awesome show (Romeo is surely no slouch on the fretboard). If anyone is interested in attending, please get your tickets from me or my band's website . Not only will you save at least $4 a ticket by avoiding TicketMaster charges, you also help out my band and the local prog scene in general! THANKS!!

Paul is not doing it for a gimmick...he has severe hearing damage and this is the only way he can continue without going completely deaf

Hey BP,

How come he just doesn't wear regular earplugs - especially something like those custom fit ones? I ALWAYS wear hearing protection on stage, so I'm in no way making fun of him. Just curious...

I said it earlier... he's Paul Gilbert! :) I imagine he could wear earplugs, but chooses to use the big muffs for the same reason he wore a pinstriped leisure suit for his set. He probably thinks they look cool, so he wears them instead of earplugs.

That's my guess.
