Hi, has anyone noticed an audible difference between the ceramic pickups on the HSH and the alnicos on the HH? What about sustain differences due to different string pull?
I've never tested them side-by-side to hear the difference - I'm sure if any one has tey will chime in here. But I will say this...
It's meaningless to talk about ceramic vs AlNiCo when the pickups were designed to be different. The ceramic set were designed for the coil splits to work better with the HSH single coil pickup and the magnets are just one part of the recipe. Besides, I think that no matter what magnet you have in a pickup, if sustain is affected it's too close to the strings. And who would expect a company like Music Man to design a pickup that adversely affected a guitar's utility?
FWIW, Brad Whitford of Aerosmith loved his HSH GC so it's certainly not an issue for him...
I played both prior to buying my HSHp. I liked both and could have gone either way. I actually didn't notice any difference between the two and went with the HSHp simply because with the more pickups gave me even more option. Although in my 7 months of owning my Game Changer, I am yet to even come close to using all of the countless possibilities that I have with the guitar.
That sounds like a great experiment, though. Aren't metal covers also supposed to change the tone a bit - make the sound warmer, more towards LP? Whereas the HSH I assume would be optimized to also sound good on the stratty 2 and 4 positions.
