Hey kids

I introducd KMAKY as Gary hanser of Kustom and BC Rich fame but I really should let you
know that inaddition oto being a Ernie Ball distributor for thirty years, he also is one of my closest friends.

What I also didn't tell you is that the whole olp concept is one hatched by Gary and I. If you love the idea..then thank me...if you have any negative comments post here ripping big Gar.

I've had three OLP Stingrays over the last couple of years, and I've got to say that, for what they are (cheapie basses to get familiar with Ernie Ball), they are well-built and reliable.

Better than the MIM Fenders of the last few years by a good shot!

Great idea!

First, I am old enough to have used Kustom stuff the first time around. Tuck-N-Roll, baby! That stuff was, in the vernacular of the day, not that we used the word 'vernacular' back then, groovy.

I even had a Kustom PA! It was sparkly.

Regarding OLP, I remember having two distinctly different thoughts about it.

1. Oh no!
2. Hey, cool!

"Oh no" because every other manufacturer on earth, it seemed, had gone offshore and - I can be as snooty as the next guy, really - I didn't want EBMM to have a cheapsh!t Squier thing going. I realize now that this was intensely personal and, frankly, elitist. I could just imagine some zit-infested EMO dildo (can I say 'dildo' here?) (wait, I'm a moderator, I bet I can) looking at my Stingray and thinking to himself, "I have one of those!" How snooty is that? I didn't want to deal with it. EBMM was unadulterated! Clean! Pure!

And then "Hey cool" because I was a zit-infested dildo myself once and the choices we had, when it came to cheaper basses, were AWFUL. Those who lived the 60s experience, and really into the 70s, will know what I mean.

Once I got over myself, it was mostly numero dos, "Hey, cool!" Because I wish that we'd had such nice "less expensive" basses around back when I thought life could be defined by owning, say, a Gibson EB0 or a Ric 4001.

In 1966, at age 10, I would have given my left nut (can I say 'left nut' here?) to have a bass as good as your average OLP is.

So - what I say now is, "Hey, cool!" And I'm completely over my elitist attitude, except when it comes to vodka.

Jeez, I do go on and on sometimes, but everyone went to bed early and I'm UP!

So - is Gary coming to the Open House?

Seriously, I was about ready to ask about the OLP connection...hell, I still haven't figured out the SUB line yet myself or the 50,000 other possible EBMM line. Thanks for answering a yet unasked question I had BP.

Hey Gary....do you still make a Mockingbird Supreme with cloud inlays and do you drink beer??

Okay, Jack, you brought back my Kustom memories. I was brought into a band around 77 to replace their bass player, and I was "given" a red 2x15 Kustom rig to use. The PA was a white Kustom setup, one guitarist had a blue Kustom rig, and the other guitarist had, I believe, a white Kustom rig. Tuck and roll indeed.

The prob' I had with OLP is that the only time i could try one, it was in the same room as my bongo...slaughtered... But that was not a fair fight and for the money, i'm sure they are good products.

I still have a black one too! It's loaded with EVMs now though. The original head died long ago, but for added EBMM content, it is now mated with a MM HD130 amp. It doesn't go out anymore, but it's a killer practice rig!

I bought the Kustom rig used back in the late seventies. It was in real good shape except the padding on the back had been split in several places with a knife (my mom sewed it up for me). The seller told me he had lent it to a friend who was then arrested for bank robbery. I opened it up hoping to find hundred dollar bills stuffed in it, but allas I found only speakers.

...didn't get a chance to hear a 2x15" at the Jeff Berlin clinic but he was using 2 15" combos... and there was an LMK asnd a.... with a load of 10"s..... absolutely great stuff! :D

but the tuck and roll is a finish that's hard to compete with, even with orange speakers hehehehehhe

Is that the same Kal David that owns The Blue Guitar in Palm Springs? Great Sunday night blues jam there!

well I have to chime in..

I think the OLP idea is problematic for one main reason.. the name "OLP".

My personal opionion is that this line of instruments has created brand confusion between 'real' EBMM guitars and OLP ones. Whether that will actually hurt the established market for EBMM seems unlikely, but I think it could mislead newbies. I'll bet my coWpilot shirt that there are kids out there who took home an OLP thinking that they'd bought a genuine Music Man. Especially in this era of the unenlightened guitar saleskid.

The phrase "Officially Licensed Product", mentioned in the same breath (or advertisement) as "Music Man" in my opinion could convey the idea that the instrument in question is a "LEGIT" Music Man!

A different name for the OLP brand could have eliminated any such confusion. There is, I think, less chance of some kid who bought a "SnazzyBrand RazoCaster" thinking he got an EBMM than another kid who bought an "Officially Licensed Product MM-1".

I also think the price point is too close to what SUB1's are actually selling for in GC's lately.

But hey.. what do I know, I'm in the title & closing business.

Welcome aboard, Gary, and drink some of Sterling's beer for me!
