Why is it that I have NEVER (to date) seen a 7 string guitar neck with a maple fretboard? Sure, the neck itself is maple, but with a rosewood or ebony fretboard. Even the JP's are rosewood...maple's supposed to be a very strong and durable wood, is it not? Why wouldn't you want that as your fretboard as well? Could it be a problem with extra tension/pressure added via the low B string?

These are obviously questions due to lack of knowledge on the issue, so if they sound off the mark, that's why. I'm just curious as to why this is the case with everything that I've seen on a 7-string aspect, and where better to ask than a guitar manufacturer's website? :D

I owned an Ibanez Universe UV777GR that had a maple fretboard (and a snot green paint job, and primary color "disappearing pyramid" position markers...) There's no reason why you can't have a maple board 7 String... That Universe was cool, but by 1993 you couldn't be seen with it in public without fear of being lynched... Fun to play, though; kinda the fat groupie or the moped of the guitar world. :D

I have now seen a 7 string guitar with a maple fretboard...thanks to Jimi D for pointing out the model # for me, a Google search pullled this up ultimately. (In fact, Jimi D, isn't this pretty much what yours looked like?)

So it must just be personal preference, and not a "requirement" as I thought before. Thanks for helping to clear that up, Jimi D. :)

By the end of the year, I'd like to have me a custom 7 string, and with that in mind, I'm gathering info about this and that right now...but that has been one of the things that I've wondered about all along.

Thanks again for the info!
