I have just made one of those decisions that could turn out to be the best or the worst I ever made. - I have just bought a rig I have not had a chance to try out.

I have been looking hard for a few months at a replacement for my Hartke Kickback 120w combo, as it has let me down for the 4th and last time.

After much research and ringing around, I have today just ordered a Gallien Krueger 400RB IV head - 280watts at 4ohms and 180watts at 8ohms, together with a GK RBS 2 x10 cab rated at 200 watts. - As no store accessible to me had it in stock, I have just ordered it without trying my Stingray through it.

I don't need a massively loud amp, just a good quality clean sounding amp for playing all styles, that I can DI for all larger venues, but is portable (the head only weighs 15lbs!) because of my shoulder problems. I just want to be heard on stage by the band and myself without worrying that the amp will cut out mid number!

Any comments or thoughts?

I had a GK 400RB head a few years ago. Good sound and reliable. Shouldn't have let it go. I also had a GK 1x15 cab with a 200w EV speaker. I wasn't as happy with it. It looks like GK has changed their cabinets quite a bit since then though. Good luck. I bet you'll like it.

I have an 800RB, and I love it. I used to have one about 10 years ago, coupled with an Ampeg 810, and then sold it when the band wasn't doing anything and I needed money to get into a house.

A while later I got an Ampeg B4, which I never liked, ran that through an Ernie Ball Audiophile 210 & an Ampeg 112.

Sold all that, and I am back with an 800RB and an Ampeg 610, which I'm very happy with. I don't forsee changing for a while.

hmm GK. I had a GK backline head and cab ( 150 watt version). It broke 5 times in the space of a year, after arguing with my supplier they refused to accept it back and have since stop trading GK, it then took me further two months to find somwhere that would touch it. One shop I went said he had 100% failure on GK 400RB heads. It seems theres a real problem in the uk with GK stuff as they are really unrealiable. I sugest you have a look at the Harmony central product review forum for more details. I think the probelm its just the UK, GK aren't saying whats wrong.

I've owned several GK heads over the years and never had problems that I didn't bring on myself....

Has anyone got or tried one of GKs MB150 combos you know the little 1x12 in the aluminium box because I was looking for something to use that is portable for a practice amp.

I am trying to find out if they are worth the money as they are quite expensive and what sound quality is considering very small size. GK seems to be scarce as an item held in stock by shops in the UK.

So if you have got/tried one of these let me know.

Cheers.

I played on one of those and my Peavey TKO 65 watts sounds better than that. The G-K kept rapping out badly on low B. Maybe if you play 4 string it would be OK. Or you could try one of these:

I got one about a month ago and LOVE it for a practice / small gig rig. Lots of headroom and no low B "rap". Plus it sounds great. For $399.00 U.S.? 307 watts? It can't be beat IMO. Tiny box too.:D

Oh yeah I need to mention that at times it "sounded" exactly like what it is.....a 12" speaker in a metal box. Certain vibrations made the metal box actually buzz.:(

Def not anything I would like to play through again.:(

I was after a stereo amp for bass and I belive these can run in stereo with another CAB. I think there more for recording than giging which is why i didn't get it. The singer in my band is a retailer for bayer who stock GK, and im sure hel be able to do you a good deal his website is

http://www.hotpiranha.co.uk/

I just hope there more reliable than my GK was.

Incindently I saw one of these amps at electromusic in doncaster, there also a GK retailer. It was bloody small though.

I play a StingRay 4 through a 400RB 2x10 combo with a GK 4x10RBH and it sounds GREAT. Never heard anything that i like more. I have had lots of compliments on the sound of the SR and the GK.:)
